other pups unpotted

I have seths in my prs and love them. I like that unpotted sound and vibe you get. I don't have a problem with squealing and don't use a low level of gain- kinda like Rev Billy G and Angus. I'm curious about how another slightly higher output pup like the PG or the EVH might sound unpotted, or would that be a squealing nightmare?

Re: other pups unpotted

I think the Seths aren't potted because the original ones weren't

I think you could do it in the others ...

it also depends on the guitar ... of course, you're more likely to have problems in a semi hollowbody

some guys want that squeal, though, and you can do that by facing the amp, and finding the right spot where it goes into feedback

Re: other pups unpotted

Back when DiMarzio first started out, his pickups weren't coil saturated. I had a Super Distortion and a PAF in my LP. When I turned the volume pot up to 10 on the guitar for either pickup, they whistled like hell! It wasn't even that controllable type feedback, just a shrill, constant whistle.

Re: other pups unpotted

You can also put some wax or cloth tape between the magnet and the baseplate and that will reduce squeal.

Re: other pups unpotted

The theory is that if a pickup is well enough made a pickup can be unpotted and still sound good. I tend to think the nature of noise is that it is just that noise variable and site dependent. Unpotted pickups may work well in a controlled studio setting but in a performance situation they may not work as well. Potting to me levels the playing field in that you can put a potted pickup in a lot of different uncontrolled environments and will perform consistently.

Re: other pups unpotted

The concern with potting is its effect on tone. I've found that if you reduce the potting time to about 5-7 minutes, the effect is negligible.

Higher tension on the wind can reduce feedback problems too.

Re: other pups unpotted

I have an ancient, unpotted Super Distortion that sounds fantastic with very few problems with unwanted feedback even at stage gain/volume levels.

Re: other pups unpotted

In the early 80's I replaced pups on my Ibanez Musician and other guitars with Super Distortions mainly to get rid of the screeching microphonic feedback. Tone was secondary since I couldn't play at the time.
Tapes from that era reveal some great tones so I guess the Super Ds weren't so bad. - Rob
