Out of curiosity...

... does anyone on the forum could tell me what SD pickups, the 490R and 498T would be close to tonewise and outputwise?

I already ear some of you (you know who you are!) saying that they're rubbish and there's no way to make a comparison. But hey, let put aside this quality consideration (that is very subjective anyway ).

I know I am far from a guitar hero, but as far as I am concerned, they can sound quite descent in my LP Studio, depanding on the amps simulation I dial in my V-amp.

Re: Out of curiosity...

sorry - i have no experience with the gibson pups, so i cant comment positively or negatively about them ... just wanted to toss an idea out there for you to consider ... if you want some variety between the two guitars, maybe put a JB-b / Jazz-n set in there to spice it up a bit ... of course, if you want the epi to be a 'hot spare' for the gibby, you might just want to put a set of gibsons in it and be done with it

good luck

Re: Out of curiosity...

As you've said yourself there is no direct equivalent, I can compare them a bit for you.

The 490R is a bit dark for my taste, that's why I swapped it out for the 57 classic in my old custom. The 490R has got kind of a low mids thing going on to my ears. Not as many highs as an A2P but about the same mids.

The 498T is like a C5 meets a JB. There is a high mids spike, but not as large, and it has more aggressive low end than the JB.

I switched the magnets in my 57 classic and 498T. That gave me the Gibson equivalent of a 59 neck, and a Custom Custom Bridge. The guy I traded the guitar off to loved the bridge pup. I thought the magnet change did wonders for the tone.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Thank you Luke Duke for this comparison. That's exactly the kind of comments I was looking for. I was thinking at some point to replace them with an APH-1 set but then realised that I quite like them as they are. ;)

The Epi is getting a set of '59 for a more vintage sound. So unless I am unhappy with the '59s, which I honestly doubt, I'll need another LP to put in some Alnico II pro. I'm kind of GASing for an Gibby LP Classic ebony but this will have to wait, since I don't have too much money to spend in music gear and I wanted to have a telecaster like guitar first. :32:

More comparisons are welcome... :)
