Out of phase. .

. . just picked up a used Schecter that has 2 humbuckers, 3-way selector, volume and tone controls. When you roll the tone pot all the way, it puts the pickups out of phase. The sound is super quack strat! How is this done?

hmm
the one at the top is the suspect , eh?

hmm
whats under the wire?
is that a green cap?

looks like nothing to the terminal to the left of the wire

hmmmm

looks like a tone pot
does the pot have a center detent or stop in the center? as a blender would?

Re: Out of phase. .

I'll open it up and draw a diagram and post later today. The tone pot has no detent, there's no added switches for phase control.

Re: Out of phase. .

Have you identified the make/model(s) of the two humbuckers?

Looking at the photograph, the four conductor + shield pickup cabling appears to have been wired according to the Seymour Duncan convention. If the pickups turn out to be of a different make, the coils of the pickups will be connected incorrectly, setting up some odd relationships. Factor in a Dial-A-Split control and things could become truly bizarre.

Re: Out of phase. .

Update, just measured the pickups at the output jack:

Neck 7.1
Both 4.6
Bridge 13.6

Weird!

coils in parallel

ohms law

in series coil A + coil B
in parallel coil A + coil B divided by 2

EDIT
wait a min
WTF

Re: Out of phase. .

the one with the green is a tone
and the yellow is the treble bleed on the volume pot

the black leads seem to be the "in from the switch"
check the length of those for a "frayed or burnt" spot

oh and change the cap
if it has shorted it would make the volume go up and down like a second volume

Re: Out of phase. .

it can be the picture's angle, but watching the 3rd picture I can notice that one of the cap pin is touching the pot shield (ground).

Re: Out of phase. .

screw driver test! when in the middle pos., and you use a screwdriver to tap the pole pieces on each coil while plugged into an amp, do you hear a loud sound when you touch the poles of each one? This should tell you if each coil is actually on the way it's supposed to be. Run thru the toggle positions and see if each position has both of the appropriate coils on.

Re: Out of phase. .

Checked a couple things suggested this afternoon, and had a ground wire pop off when moving the wires. Packed the guitar up and dropped it off at my local tech's for new pots and wiring. Going with dual split, screw it!

Re: Out of phase. .

well the tech will sort it out

great news

be a fine player here ina bit

be sure to let us know what he finds and how it sounds

pic's are always welcome
