Out of the 60's & 50's Les Paul neck profiles which do you prefer? I like them both for their own reasons. Cast your vote and let us hear the reasoning behind your choice.

Let me start by saying I think the 60's neck profile is more comfortable to me because I'm used to slimmer neck profiles. Different feel for sure with the 50's neck profile. On the other hand though the tone of a LP with a 50's neck profile sounds more thick and chunky to me tonewise which I really dig in comparison to a LP with a 60's neck profile. Any thoughts anyone? :32:

I like the 50's profile since it's closest to my SG Standard. I like a big, thick neck.

I prefer the 60's Neck. I have small hands and the thinner neck gives me the comfort for playing fast runs. I do own several Pauls with 50's neck.

not 50's but the early 50's...if you aren't familiar with the early 50's profile, on the first fret from the surface of the fretboard to the back of the neck is exactly 1 inch and gets slightly fatter down the neck. I think its safe to call that chunky. I like it because when playing leads your hand is much more relaxed because that chunk of wood fills out your hand instead of leaving a gap between it and your palm which will make you fight the neck a bit. I've found that bends are more accurate and buttery with a thick neck. It also tends to resonate better.

You need an "I HAVE played both and I can't decide" option.
I have one of each and I really can't make up my mind. The 60s neck is easier (for me) for lead playing and top fret access, but the 50s neck is more comfortable for rhythm playing. Played acoustically my Standard with 50s neck has a louder brighter tone than my Classic with 60s neck - not sure whether that's totally down to the necks though.

I like the thicker neck. My '53 Gibson Southern Jumbo has a fairly thick neck. My '59 Les Paul Historic also has a fairly thick neck compared to the 60's Gibsons I've owned.
I think the thicker neck sounds better. Seems to be a little stiffer and if string energy isn't being spent making a skinny neck flap around in the breeze, this gives most guitars a deeper more solid tone.

I'm pretty sure my LP has a 50's neck, nice and chunky, but not too chunky, it fills out my hand just right...

I love thick necks on my guitars. I find I have to fight thinner ones like my G&L. I have pretty big hands, the kind of hands that were made to hold a football
so having that extra wood to fill in the space makes for a more comfortable playing situation.
There's nothing quite like a vintage '50s Gibson, I feel priviledged to have been able to play one for a little bit.

I have small hands but have never been comfortable with thin necks. Fat, round necks feel better to me and I play better on them. I've had Gibsons with the 60s necks and I always wind up selling them.

I prefer the 60's. Feels more versatile to me, a 50's neck feels like im playing a baseball bat. Could be because i have small hands.

I prefer the 59 Profile, and also the PRS McCarty wide/fat w/soft V.
As far as other LP necks, I don't like any neck that tapers, so the 60's taper is out.
The Classic 60 neck is similar, but doesn't taper. I've enjoyed them but wouldn't buy another. I can understand why Simon F likes the 59 and Classic 60 for their qualities.
The 57 Black Beauty neck is just a hair thinner than the 59, and I really like it.
The 57 Goldtop neck and R8 and R9's are much thicker and are an aquired taste.
Even though I love the tone and chunkiness of those necks, they're a bit too fat for my preference. I'd say the 50's or 59 profile (same thing) is my favorite.

Remember that the term 50s/60s neck is a recent creation by Gibson. I think it came about with the new specs for the 2002 Standard. Classics always had a thinner neck like their ancient 1960 counterparts did.
My 89 Les Paul Standard has a neck that reall is between the size of the modern 50s/60s necks. In fact it feels very similar to a few 1960 Bursts I have had the pleasure to play. I would prefer a "V"neck like my Strat and Washburn hollowbody have, but what the hay.
