P-90 Tone for Strat Bridge and VV questions??

Hey Guys!

its been a long while since ive posted here, but i need your help...

Last week, I became the proud owner of a maple neck Fender Highway 1 strat!

BUT - i hate the bridge pickup - its very thin and harsh to my ears... I was considering putting in a humbucker, but i already have humbuckers on all my other guitars

as a result, i was thinking of putting somthing that IS or sounds like a P-90. Do you have any opinons on what would work?

I need somthing thick enough to rock hard with alot of distortion, but also compliment the single coils in the neck and middle - in clean and dirty modes...TO my ears, this strat is quite bright sounding - a quality i want to keep as to distinguish it from my other axes

Ive been doing a bit of research and was thinking of getting 2 Dimarzio Virtual Vintage 2.1's for the neck and middle positions and a Virtual Vintage Solo Pro (which is meant to sound like a P-90).

But theres also the option of a Phat Cat? How do these pickups sound in strats?

Any advice on the above - whether about the P-90s or the virtual vintage set would be much appreciated

Cheers,
Ishmun:dance:

Rio Grande "Muey Grande" or the "Stelly" will get you there ;)

The Lindy Fralin Steel Pole 43 is great too.

Rio grande has a single coil sized P-90 out for tele and strat now.

It's called the dirty harry, give it a go. (They've got clips on the site)

It's not a P-90 but I just installed my VHot Paf (Dimarzio) in my strat as an experiment and was pretty blown away by it. The 3-D tone thing that this pickup has makes it very articulate and transparent but able to stand up to a ton of gain. Not as bright as the 59 but has good bottom and strong mids. It's wound at 9.13k so it's right in between the bro bucker and 59 as far as output goes. Something to think about.

I'm using a slightly hotter version than what you're looking for. I'm running the Virtual 2N in the neck, a Virtual 2B in middle and a Pro Track (single version of a PAF) in the bridge. I love this combo.

I've got some sound clips that go thru the various pickups. Check out my Soundclick page. Most all of the clips are with my Strat.

Have you considered the Quarter Pound for Strat? It's supposedly similar to a P-90 tone, but standard single coil size. I don't have experience with them, but I've got one on order for the neck of my Ibanez SAS36FM....

Good suggesstion. The Quarter Pounder definitely gets some P-90ish tones in a Strat bridge. It doesn't sound exactly like a P90, but it's in the ballpark.. It's a nice fat pup with thick mids.

Thats one that i would suggest actually, the quarter pounder bridge...it'l rock your socks off!

It is a true single coil though so you'll still get the hum.

Well, in the duncan territory, i would say Jbr jr Or little screaming daemon bridge. and jb jr neck.
i have no experience with the true sd single coils

For the ones you posted try out the phat cat. It's like the single coil so it will cancel out the hum in the 4th position & sounds great clean & dirty.
