P-90's

What kind of tone does a P-90 give compaired to a regular strat single tone. What type of guitar wood do they sound best in?

Thanks

Re: P-90's

P90s to my ears- lots of bark and growl, very RAWK sort of tone, more of a grindy, less smooth tone than a humbucker... but not as chimey, glassy or sparkly of a tone as a "normal" SC...

P-90's are louder, warmer, and fuller than Fender single coils. Much better tone. They're in between a Fender SC & a HB. They sound great in any guitar with P-90 cavitites.

For the rest of us, Phat Cats fit in humbucker slots. I use Phat Cats in the neck position of an LP, SG, & 335. For me they're a little dark, so I replace one of the A2 magnets with an A5 (making a A5/A2 magnet set), and it really brings out the open single coil tones.

I prefer HB's on the bridge, as the PCB is bright. A pair of 250K's would help take off a little of the treble if you want to go that route.

Re: P-90's

Bah. P90s give the ultimate RAWK tone IMO, but they won't shimmer or sparkle like a strat, so I wouldn't go that far.

For those of us that have a limit of how much treble we can endure, P-90's sound better than Fender SC's. All a matter of taste. I'm a "warmth" guy.

agree to disagree, just know I'll always be here to call you out and you are my reason for existence and completion :D

Re: P-90's

Howdy,

Two more classic P-90 songs are "Johnny B. Goode" (Chuck Berry's original version) and "Get Off My Cloud" by the 'Stones.
My "desert Island" guitar is a 1997 Gibson LP Special. I have SD Vintage P-90s in her and the tone is smoooth, warm and of course raunchier than Halle Berry in fishnet stockings and a miniskirt!
There's nothing like cranking my LP Special through my old Vibro Champ. I don't necessarily mean with the volume on "10", either; although I do enjoy George Thorogood tone sometimes I admit. My favorite P-90 tone is when I put my old Vibro Champ's volume at around 6 or 7 and accompany my Stones recordings. Instant "Get yer Ya-Ya's out"!

Re: P-90's

The Phat Cat sounds very much like a humbucker with the tone at about halfway to my ears. But with the tone wide open, the treble cuts through better than any strat single I've tried.

Re: P-90's

Fatter than the fattest single coil, and more cut than any humbucker. We all need a guitar with P-90's.

I have a vintage bridge in the neck (yes) and a custom neck in the bridge of my LP Studion and it jazzes, blues, and rawk and rowls all night!

(Slade - I'm with you on the blueman! I love a lot of his work, but comments like the bridge deal here drive me nuts! We'll take turns on watch!!!! Did you know his parents put him in a sack and beat him with a2 mag pups when he was little?)

Re: P-90's

If you want to be heard clearly onstage doing your thing alongside another riffing guitarist in your band who crunches away on humbuckers, the P-90s will certainly give you great separation in the mix. They have a very defined clarity that might not be so smooth when practicing on your own, but they will certainly sharpen up your band's live sound. That has to be the aim, finding something that compliments the whole band sound.

I use a PRS Soapbar with SD designed P-90s for most of my rhythm work alongside a Van Halen obessed lead guitarist and my parts are clear as a bell in the mix without having to be too loud and feeding back - they just cut through nicely. For smoother lead lines though, I prefer my SG with SD Custom and Jazz pick-ups.
