P-bass pickup installation

I recently installed the SPB-2 pickup on my bass. I was confused when I installed the new pickup because the old pickup was permanently attached to the housing with the mounting "ears" to put the screw through. This allowed springs to be installed for better height adjustment.

With the Seymour Duncan pickup, the plastic cover is completely separate. It is only held on by downward force of the screws, but it seems foam underneath the pickup is the only thing pushing the pickup up into the cover. The problem is that I need my pickups higher than this strip of pickup foam will allow.

Is there a better way to attach the cover to the pickup so that they move together as I tighten or losen the pickup screws? I have mainly dealt with MM humbucker style pickups in the past. This is the first time I've seen this type of configuration where the pickup cover doesn't act as the housing for the pickup..

It sounds like you just need more foam. The old pickup was probably epoxy potted, which was why the cover was attached. A thicker piece of foam will help push the pickup upwards so that it sits neatly in the cover.

The original pickup almost certainly had an underslung bar magnet. The stock foam pad was sized to allow for the thickness of this bar magnet. The SD/Basslines pickup does not have a bar magnet. Hence, the gap needs to be filled.
