P-J Quarter Pounders

My bud has a Warwick and bought these pickups and wants them wired with a Vol. and Tone for each. I think it would be better with 2 Vol. master tone and a blend. Opinions guys?

Re: P-J Quarter Pounders

I agree that it would be overkill. On my JBS (P-J config) I have one vol, one blend, one tone. I like the simplicity of it. I'm a big fan of S-P switches, so if I had a fill a 4th hole that'd be it.

I like the idea of Volume, 2 tones, and blend as well. It would get the most tonal variation out of the pickups, and allow you to make changes quickly.

Re: P-J Quarter Pounders

Series/parallel between two single coil pickups works better when the coils are of roughly equal output.

With series linking of a P into a J, things could get muddy.

Reconfiguring the output conductors of a P pickup to allow series/parallel interconnection of its coils could prove useful. Parallel mode P is a pretty nice match for the J.

WARNING - Reconfiguring a brand new SPB-3 to four conductor + shield output cable will invalidate your warranty.

My old bass player has a pair of SPB-3s in an early 80s BC Rich Mockingbird with series / parallel wiring. It isn't exact, but it does sound pretty close to a J with both pickups in parallel.

Re: P-J Quarter Pounders

Nearly every passive bass I have/had that has two pickups has/had the two vol/two tone setup (from the early 60s Fender Jazz). I like it a lot as it's a fairly simple setup, and you can get a lot of nice tonal changes on the fly. The only downside is that with two volume knobs, I rely more on a mute switch to cut the sound if I'm leaving the bass plugged in; a master volume/blend works better in this scenario.

Give the guy what he's asking for; it's his bass. Let him decide later if he wants something else.
