im having a guitar built to put a sustainer in and i want the bridge pickup to be versitile yet still get sum nice heavy tones so is the hot P-rails as awsome as ive heard?

Re: P-rails hot

The hot P-Rails features a hotter coil wind and stronger magnet material. In some instruments, this is advantageous. In others, it would be a nuisance.

As you can probably imagine, Sustainer + single coil = recipe for hum and RF interference issues. A simple, regular humbucker might be a wiser choice.

Re: P-rails hot

The P-Rails models do offer 2 humbucking modes, parallel & serial, and a fair number of people seem to like it's parallel mode more than other humbuckers. Other thing is usually the Sustain mode kicks in humbucking automatically, so you can still have variety the rest of the time.

Sustainiac can use the sustainer as an active pickup when it's not in sustain mode, too, which also improves versatility.

Not certain what I'd choose for a bridge pickup, depends a lot on the guitar and the range of uses I wanted from it.

Might look at a PATB-2 Parallel Axis Distortion or P-Rails Hot if it's for metal mayhem. PATB-1b for a broader range. PATB-3 if you want a bit more reminiscent of a PAF, but still hot enough to drive the sustainer adequately.

If actives appeal, maybe the Gus G Fire bridge [though I think it's only sold as a set, so that'd leave you with an unused neck model].

Or there's any number of more common models. JB, Distortion, Custom 8, etc...

I'd stick to something that's at least moderately hot, lower output models don't tend to work as well with sustainers. Outside that, really need a bit more on the guitar & what you want to do with it to give specific advice.

Re: P-rails hot

The P-Rails Hot, as said already, is a hotter wind plus it has two A8 magnets. This, IMHO, is too much even for the bridge position but in the neck I don't think it's gonna sound so good. The P-Rails (regular) is pretty hot and middy, but if you feel you need something hotter and feel that the P-Rails Hot has the output that will work better with the sustainer, I would suggest putting A5 magnets in it...it will retain that high output but will get rid of some of the extra mids which make it sound kinda muddy.

It is a really good parallel hummer sound.

Re: P-rails hot

the sustainer is a fernandez in the neck the body is most likley going to be either mahogany or ash...havent decied yet and i wants deh brutals but still have nice straty cleans from it in the bridge
