P-Rails

Has anyone tried the new P-rails yet? I fell in love with that P-90 sound a long time ago and recently pimped my LTD with all new hardware and new P-Rail pickups and these things are just sick! With the push pull pots I installed I am able to get all the sounds out of them: single coil, P-90, and humbucker in both series and parallel. Man these are just so sweet. They sound sooooo good through my Mesa Boogie Mark IV head and 2x12 Mesa recto cab. :arms

Re: P-Rails

Welcome BoogeMan67! I have a set of P-Rails in a mahogany Gibson, Mesa .50 Cal +, and a vertical Recto 2x12. When it feels right, it feels right! I don't plan on ever replacing anymore pickups in my Gibson.

Re: P-Rails

dude i was about to make the same thread. when i saw them i couldnt believe my eyes

now how much of a wonder is this? having H S and P90 on the SAME pickup... now thats something im gasing about and i havent even heard it.

how does it sound on each of the positions? if it works like a real H and a real p90 im in!!

plz more info! (im already drooling on a tele or lp with two of these)

ps: are they suitable for classic rock, mild overdrives, etc? they seem to have a kind of high output

Re: P-Rails

It works like a real P90 because it IS a real P90.

It works like a real humbucker because it IS a real humbucker!

Re: P-Rails

I think Seymour Duncan really hit a home run with their new pickups the P-rails and the Alt 8. I love my SH-15 and have so far, read nothing but good things about the P-rails. And I REALLY want one of the ESP ltd Potbellys that comes stock with P-rails.

Re: P-Rails

Well the P-90's do sound like true P-90's and the single coils are pretty sweet too. The singles don't sound quite like my strat, but I like the rails better! The P-90's have have a very nice fat sound and you are right they have quite a lot of output. I have a bit of trouble getting a true clean sound with them so far. They seem to be pick sensitive and will cause a clip ini the clean channel pretty early. Part of this may be from the fact that the Mark IV is new to me as well. Today I swapped out my EL-34's and replaced them with 6L6's just to hear the difference and that's when I was noticing the clean issues, which I thought having all 6L6's would help (for those unfamiliar with the Mark IV you can run two 6L6's in in the A/B class section and 2 EL34's in the A class section which is very sweet. It'll also do all 6V6's and all 5881's too!!) But I digress. The buckers sound really cool. In the series position they are true powerful buckers. In parallel they have a thinner more single coil sound.

Now can anyone suggest a good upgrade pickup for my 335? I play a variety of stuff from classic to reggae to blues. I love the P-rails, but I think I want a different setup as it's a semi hollow.

Thanks Mojo for the link. I am new to the community here and didn't know how to search.

Re: P-Rails

I am thinking about P-Rails for my semi hollow but worried they might be too hot. I have started to think about putting the P-rails neck pickup in the bridge to get a lower output and then probably put a Jazz pickup in the neck. Any thoughts or ideas welcome.

I have also toyed with the idea of getting a lower output P-Rails custom wound but too get the lower H output I would probably have to sacrifice good P90 and S tone, which kinda defeats the purpose.

Word on the street is P-rails wired in parralel sound like PAF humbuckers.

Re: P-Rails

Howdy,

For me the P-Rails are a long overdue concept. I adore P-90's and like Fendery single-coils. So..enter the P-Rails!
I'm reluctant to replace the '59s in my ES-335 just because of..aesthetics, I suppose. I'm no big fan of HBers, to tell the truth. Objectively the P-Rails would be perfect for me in my ES-335, but I just can't bring myself to do it.
Perhaps if I had second ES-335. Of course 335s aren't cheap. All my other electrics are single-coil, btw.

PS: Let's hear some more feedback on these fascinating P/Us.

Re: P-Rails

P-Rails are going to be my FIRST choice for all of my future guitar builds. Unless I need something really specific, it's just silly how much ground they cover. It's a go-to pickup from now on!

Re: P-Rails

I had an itchy trigger finger so I bought a set of P-Rails for a home build.....the body isn't even cut yet! Now they're "burning a hole" so to speak. Maybe I'll stick one in the Hello Kitty just to hear it, I don't mind drilling into it for the mini switch.
