P90 appreciation thread?!

I love P90 pickups,

My one and only electric, my Epiphone Wildkat "koa" has P90's...

There is that focused, strong single coil "bite"-

yet with power, fatness, mids-

And I get the heaviest tones I've ever gotten- (i play alot of riff based heavy metal)
along with sweet, chiming clean tones.

:)

Because of the one-off cover designs on my pickups, I was told by BKP pickups, that I had to send the pickup in for a rewind/magnet change,
instead of buying replacements.

But they work fine!! Bridge pickup is 12K, neck pickup 9K (if i remember correctly). Apart from microphonic covers (which I'll fix with silicone), they are superb.

Any P90 lovers "out there"? :)

Love me some p90s! They're much more versatile than most people give them credit for.

Re: P90 appreciation thread?!

Yeah... my P90 guitars, were the only ones I could use the tone control in...

unless just making more "mush"

P90's are aggressive, loud and bright-.

i can turn the tone control down halfway, without any mud- just easening the top end ;).

Re: P90 appreciation thread?!

P-90s are my all-time favorite pup. Singles are a tad thin sounding and most buckers are muffled and muddy sounding (I DO have some favorite buckers, however). I love the aggressive attack and clarity that you just can't seem to get in most (if not all) buckers. And the power that is so hard to find in singles. I totally love the flexability and versatility of P-90s due to having two magnets.

Someone here told me something along the lines of "if you're aiming for an Iced Earth type tone, you'll need a Les Paul with humbuckers" -

:o

I'm getting the heaviest tones EVER! As i said- with my stock bridge P90 :).

There's something about the bite and focus...

Some day I might try to experiment, with changing one, or two, of the stock magnets.
because of the special covers, I've heard I need to send the entire pickup in for a rewind, if I need something more done.

cheers! :)

Are you sure you can't remove the covers on yours?
Usually it's just a blob of solder on each side.

Yeah,

Plan is to remove the covers, apply a decent amount of tube- silicone ;
and solder the covers back on..

There is a gruesome feedback in the covers, that stops when I hold a finger on the cover, to mute it.

So I hope some silicone in between will fix it. :)

(The pickups are mounted with screws in the covers, "dog ear" style) :)

Re: P90 appreciation thread?!

Have you looked at those pickups? The covers are pretty much welded on (they are identical to Casino P90s). Silicone? Molten wax would work much better.

That someone was me, and I stand by it. And I also own a guitar with P90s.
