P90 for me?

I just purchased a Les Paul with P90 pickups. Would I be advised to replace the stock pickups and if so, what are the best for blues and classic rock?

Thanks,
SGLP

Re: P90 for me?

I am using a Peavey Transtube.
I do like them but it seems like everyone is replacing stock.
I may not but I like to experiment too.
I may be going to a ValveKing or possibly a Classic amp.

welcome to the forum!

If everyone was shootint up heroin, would you do it too? Just because you wanted to experiment? rermember - a lot of people here (me included!!!)are hardcore pup swapping tone junkies with more money & time than chops or sense!!!!

Stick with the pups for a while. I love P-90's, and Gibson P-90's are good. Maybe a Hot P-90 is what you really want...but just get into the whole P-90 thing first, then decide what you need more/less of. Just having P-90's ought to be enough for now!

I suspect that once you get used to the sound you'll really love them! even moreso through a classic... but I like Peavey Transtubes.

And one of the best pups I have period is a stock Gibson....

Re: P90 for me?

Not that I've had a lot of experience with Gibby P90's (just some with SD's) but if you like them why change them?

If they are microphonic have them waxed (you can do it yourself too if you know what you're doing), if you like them to be a bit quieter have someone shield the cover, if you just want them to become hum-cancelling with each other get someone to re-arrange the magnets on one of them (IIRC that ought to do it tough I never got why it works if the coil has to be in the opposite direction).

Remember, Gibson did invent them, they ought to know how to make them. Then again they also invent the LP and the forum is littered with QC horror stories LOL.

Re: P90 for me?

Stock P-90's through a Peavey Classic would probably be fantastic! I'd go for the real tube amp before switching the pickups.

Re: P90 for me?

I have a Les Paul Melody Maker with a stock Gibson P90 and it is staying! I agree that you should play with them for a while before you change.

There are a lot of nice Duncans if you want to experiment. I guess I would try the Antiquity and the Custom. I've heard that the Hot can be a little dark. Lollars P90's tend to get a lot of raves too

I speak from 1st hand experence when I say that's one of the better tones there are in the guitar world.

LPDC with P-90s into a classic 50 2x12 with EL84s.

I swaped the bridge P-90 for a filtertron and was pretty well happy though. It was mainly to get rid of the noise.

Re: P90 for me?

I don't have a problem at all with the TONEs of the Gibson P90s...what bugs me is that they are not calibrated, and the neck sounds boomy compared to the bridge, which sounds weak compared to the neck.

Height adjustment can only do so much.

Re: P90 for me?

The Duncan Antiquity is one of the best sounding P-90 I have ever heard.

One of those in the neck is a good start.

Re: P90 for me?

Now - are you sure you have P-90's? Gibson also makes P-100's. Those are their P-90 stacked humbing versions. They sound P-90ish, but are no where near as cool as rel P-90's!

Re: P90 for me?

I would say that your weak link in the setup is the Peavey Transtube amp.

After you get the Classic 30 or ValveKing then I would say you're in a situation to really evaluate what the real sound of the stock P-90's are and then make a change or not.

They don't make P100's anymore. They were so unpopular (because as you say they just didn't sound nearly as good) that they discontinued them. I say good riddance...

So I guess it depends on how old the guitar is or what model. If it's a Historic or something high-end, no P100's. If it's a USA model made in the last 3-4 years or so, also no P100's.

Re: P90 for me?

a p90 is one of my favorite pickups...they beat the crap out of all the other pickups gibson makes IMO. you can get cool rock tones or raunchy blues tones. I think though a p90 can do almost anything except shred.....it can angus young shred but not eddie van halen or anything. I thinkit would be a good idea to keep it stock...a gibbson with p90's is classic. but if you ever want shred or a heavier sound....emg makes p90 version if ther humbuckers and so does dimarzio. seymour has hotter p90's but i dont think they are hum canceling

Re: P90 for me?

This just in: Epiphone Billy Jo model using P-100's. The vermin has not been exterminated!
