P90 in a tele package

I'm in the middle of my tele project and I need some pickup recommendations.

I was going to go with the Lollar T Specials (still might), but due to some setbacks in my project (Possibly having to buy another body) I'm thinking twice about dropping 170 bucks for a set.

I'm not really digging the Harmonic Designs as they are in the price range of the Lollars and if I were to drop that kind of money I would opt for the Lollars. My SD Options look like the STL Hots and STL Quarter Pounds.

Ideas and Insight?

Re: P90 in a tele package

Since Seymour doesn't make a P-90 in a Tele single coil size, I'm going to recommend the Lindy Fralin SP-43 for Tele. Lindy can put those together for you for about $80. each. Great pickup if you're looking for P-90 tone in a Strat or Tele single coil size. Lew

Re: P90 in a tele package

the JD isnt exactly like a P90, but i find that it sometimes sounds similar

Re: P90 in a tele package

Voodoopickups.com has a couple that are supposedly P90esque.

Re: P90 in a tele package

Hang tight and I'll give you a review of the Bluesbucker from Dimarzio. I'm installing one in my bridge in place of the VHPAF that sounds too much like the VVPAF in the neck. This should add some punch to the bridge. Apparently not as much snarl as I thought, but it should be interesting to say the least. It WILL be different for sure. I'll be trading the VHPAF in for something else. Still don't know what that will be...

Pickup shipped this Friday and should be here next week sometime. I'll install and review it as soon as it gets here.

Good advice folks

Lew, I'm gonna try to find some reviews on thsoe SP43 as Lindy's site doesn't offer up much info on them. It got me thinking that SD is pretty wise to offer all this information about the pickups that they do.

flank, the JD is an alnico 2, which makes me think its gonna be a bit bright for my tastes.

falstaff, I'm checking out voodoo right now

scott, I've got a bit of time, its probably gonna be like 2-3 weeks before I throw down for some magnets wrapped in wire. Sounds good.

The JD, IMO, is not going to be to bright. It's pretty midrangey and the highs are not as bright as those in a alnico 5 Tele pickup.

As for the SP-43 it really does sound alot like a P-90. I have one in the bridge position of a Strat and I'd say it's about 70% P90 and 30% Strat...or something like that.

The JD is a hotter, louder and stronger pickup though...it's a favorite of mine too.

Nice, the SP neck sounds p90ish aswell?

Re: P90 in a tele package

You might be able to get the SD Custom Shop to make you something, too. OC Duff or one of the other winders might have something up their sleeve as well. Price might get in the way there, though.
