P90 in middle position for SG build?

So I'm building my own SG, and I'm thinking of having a humbucker-P90-humbucker configuration. I have 2 questions: 1. Would the P90 get in the way? and 2. Should I use a neck or bridge P90? I can't find any that work in both on the SD website.

These might be stupid questions.

Re: P90 in middle position for SG build?

Those are legitimate questions. Whether a middle HB or P-90 gets in the way of your picking and strumming, depends on your playing habits. For some players it definitely does. You've developed habits over the years, and if you want a large PU in a place where there didn't used to be one, you may have to change how you use your right hand... or stick with guitars you're used to.

I have an SG with a bridge HB and HB-sized neck P-90, which is a great combination. I get the fuller sound of a HB bridge, and the clarity and high-end of a P-90 neck.

The reason there are very few HHH or H/P-90/H guitars isn't because of a conspiracy or the unresponsiveness on the part of guitar makers. The vast majority of players don't want them, because a big middle PU gets in the way of their right hand, and they really doesn't often more in the way of tones than you can get from a two PU guitar, especially using a push-pull or two. I've had some HHH & H/P-90/H guitars (seemed like a good idea at the time) and have sold most of them. Didn't give me anything different tonally, and my pick keeps hitting the middle PU. They're much better on paper than in practice.

This.

There is an argument for a triple P90 layout but, for me, that means a Gibson Firebird.

There is also an argument for splitting the difference between humbucker and P90 tones by installing SD P-Rails pickups - ideally, using Triple Shot mounting surrounds.

Re: P90 in middle position for SG build?

OP: An HH guitar with the Jimmy Page 4 push-pull system gives far more tones than the 3 PU layout you're considering. What's your objective with this guitar? To get a P-90 in there someplace? (the neck is the best spot) More tones? (there are more versatile ways) More pieces of metal on the front of the guitar?

The middle pickup looks SO good on, say one of those 60s white SG customs. But I can't imagine it being very useful. Both my SGs have a big ole hole dug in the spot above the top e string from picking, right where that middle pickup ring would go... heh.

+1. A bright white SG Custom with a maestro vibrato is one of the world's most beautiful guitars, and as gorgeous as the 3 gold HB's are, they're also a big part of the reason it's not popular with players. Hard for many people to strum/pick, and the way they're wired is pitiful: 6 coils, a 3-way switch, and no push-pulls.

they're crap in practice because most manufacturers refuse to take the extra steps of making that middle pickup actually useful. The argument 'but you'll hit it' is a moot one too because you can set it up low (simply use a lower ring or a p90 which can be set up flush with the top).

Re: P90 in middle position for SG build?

A more powerful P90 can be set flush with the top. If you will use it, that is up to you. I have never tried the setup you mention, but if you decide to go for it, let us know how it sounds, as I am curious now.
