PA Recommendations

Any suggestions on a PA that cost $1000 or less? Main intention is for band practices but I'd like the PA to be suitable for shows inside a small halls as well. All recommendations welcome.

Re: PA Recommendations

how much do you want to get? two mains, two monitors and a mixer and power amp? does that include mics, cables, stands etc...

look for used speakers and powered mixer or mixer and amp. the old stuff can sound really good but can be really heavy and maybe bulky.

Re: PA Recommendations

Peavey makes some nice things.

Buying used is probably the way to go. As long as what your buying is in great shape, you'll get the most for your money.

Re: PA Recommendations

Yamaha makes good stuff too. We just picked up 2 floor monitors (BR12's), 2 mains (BR15's), a powered mixer (EMX5014C) (mains off this amp) and an outboard power amp for the monitors. Can't remember what the total was but it was over $1000, but we bought all new stuff, except my graphic EQ for the monitors and mics/stands that we already had. The power amp in that mixer has plenty of punch for small clubs/bars. We've had no problem being heard.

Look used for speakers and even the power amp. Mixers I'm a little leary on getting used. The last few I've been in contact with that were used were crap. Half the faders didn't work or a channel was blown. Definitely try before you buy if you must look at used mixers, but go new if you can.

Re: PA Recommendations

is this basically just for vocals or will keyboard or the kick drum or ??? be going thru it as well?

i use the yamaha club series (ie s115v) and have a pair of 15" mons and pair of 15" mains. they are 70 lbs each but they sound good and are pretty effiicient which means XXX watts sounds louder than it would would with something less efficient. if you can find a pair used, i highly recommend them. i think they are around $300 each new so maybe $225 each used?

i would suggest getting a pair of 15" speakers and a good powered mixer to start with. especially for practice. getting better stuff in the begining may not let you get as much but it will last you much longer. i started off with two sm15v monitors so i could use them as mains or monitors and used whatever crappy mixer and power amp i could get my hands on. then i got a used yamaha emx512sc, then i got the s115v mains. its a good system that sounds as good or better than most other bands drag out to small clubs and didnt cost a bundle. more than your $1000 but to me it makes more sense to take that $1000 and get the beginings of what will serve you for a while. i ran the mixer and just two speakers for while and i got by fine. now i run an extra amp and sub but for vocals it isnt necessary.

the br speakers are cheaper but still good

Re: PA Recommendations

Check into Yorkville stuff. Bang for the buck they are very good through their entire range.

Re: PA Recommendations

+1 on Yamaha.

I've had some recent experience with a Behringer packaged system, and it hasn't held up well. Lots of busted pots, etc.

I've also been getting aquainted with my church's Carvin system. It's bigger (24-channel mixer) but the quality is borderline. To keep the feature vs. (cost + size) ratio up, they use really small knobs & pots. Hard to read, hard to operate. One fader got busted before I arrived.

As other have said, used is good for amps and speakers. Definitely try before you buy when it comes to mixers. On you budget, stay away from effects and fancy stuff. What you need is a solid mixer, amp, and speakers.

Re: PA Recommendations

Avoid behringer mixers and power amps like the plague. The yamaha stuff is much more robust.
