PAF in a tele neck

last night i was bored so i routed the pickup cavity in one of my teles for a full sized humbucker, and dropped a 59 in there. i kept the 250k pots and the texas special bridge pickup (only for now). they actually mesh really well together in the middle position but the neck position shines. it is an amazing sound for this tele. it turned it into a blues machine. I really like the 59 in the neck of a tele now. I thought it might be a little too bright but when i plugged it in i got a different story. it is smooth and articulate, not shrill or boomy. it is just the way i like my humbuckers to sound

I know there are some guys here with 59's in their strats and teles did you change the value of the pots and if so? what are the values?

Re: PAF in a tele neck

I've often wondered why someone would do this. I'm not a fan of the neck pickup in the tele, but to my ears the difference between the two would be too harsh. I can understand how the Texas tele pickup would be a nice combo since I have that pickup in my tele and I like it a lot.

How did that mod get started (not to hijack your thread), anyone know who was the first?

Re: PAF in a tele neck

I use 500K in my Strats with the 59 Trembucker. Yours would be brighter if you went to 500K but if you're happy with it as is why fix it it if it isn't broken? :laugh2: Lew

Re: PAF in a tele neck

that is what i was thinkin lew. i think it makes it combine a bit better with the bridge.

not sure who started that mod, my guess is that it first happened way back in 1954-55, not long after the humbucker came out. Maybe it took until 1956 or 57 i don't know but it had to be right around then.

I usually like the neck pickups in teles, at least the ones i have. But i needed something different in one since i had three teles

Isn't it great what you can do with a Tele? There aren't a whole lot of modifications that you can make to them that won't make them sound better.

Re: PAF in a tele neck

teles are just great guitars. you can mod them any way you like and they just take it so well. they even look cool after they are modded. i used the humbucker mounting rig and the pickguard and it looks really cool with the contrasting black on white.

i am working on my strats today, i put a vintage bridge on a standard body, now all i need to do is sell my 50's reissue so i can get a neck for the other strat.

50's Reissue? Tell me about this 50's Reissue that you want to sell... :32:
it is a strat butch, i have a black body with a maple neck. the date says may 30 2000. i had a set of ants in it, but i am consolidating my collection and making one ultimate strat from my two and a new neck, a 62 reissue, if i can find one. the guitar has no pickups or bridge in it, but it does have a sss pickguard with the controls and jack. the maple neck is just about like the 50's reissue tele neck but with a strat headstock. nice guitar and nice playing but i want a rosewood board on mine. i have a thread in the trading post about it but i would be happy to talk to you about it some more if you would be interested butch. I wouldn't even need to ship it, i am not too far from you.
