Paf Pickups!!! Help

So I went to guitar center today. Went up a string guage. Went straight to the sound room afterward. :) Lots of amps there, mostly Marshall or Mesa tubers. I try the DSL first, and then the Mesa. Like the Marshall. Nice and punchy. I didn't like the Mesa. Anyway, I was playing a David Gilmour sig strat, very nice, EMG single coils. I then realize that I LIKE THE STRAT BETTER THAN MY GUITAR!!! The tone, man, the tone. I have a Custom SH-5 in my guitar, but I prefered the strats pup over that. I jam out several blues licks O mine, lovin' the Marshall, but then a guy walks in. He watches me play then i stop and we talk. He had a homemade strat with a Duncan (of course :) ) We talked a tad, and i told that "I wish I could find some equipment that can do blues, but can rip it up for metal." Then he let me play his guitar. OH MY GOD. PAF. PERFECT FOR ME. Turn down the volume for blues, turn it up for hard rock or 80s metal. Perfect. Instantly fell in love with the crisp, punchy, cruncy tone i was gettin outta that guitar thru the Marshall DSL. I fell out of love with the Custom.

THE PAF IS WAT I NEED, WANT AND MY DESTINY!!! :newangel:

He said he wasn't sure wat pup it was, only that it was in the same section as the George Lynch Demon... HELP!!! I need to kno a good PAF pup

I honostly had no idea how good low output pickups like PAFs were. NO idea the suited my perfectly. PAF OWNS ALL!!!!

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

It could be anything. Which pup it was sitting next to tn the case is meaningless. I doubt it was a true PAF as those sell for thousands each. Seems unlikely someone would dump one in a strat and tool around GC with it.

Describe the pole pieces, Did it have a SD logo?? Was it covered? How do you know its even PAF style?? If the guy didn't know what he bought I doubt he would have that knowledge.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

Yea, it was actually in the strat owned by the man i talked to

It was a Seymour Duncan pickup

Wat I meant to say was PAF-like, and that he said that it was "the pickup above the George Lynch Screamin' Demon" referring to the website. Don't kno if was actually the Full Shred pup

Are low output pups gonna give me that open sound? You kno, like i could roll down the volume and get a bluesy tone and turn it up for a metal/hard rock Van Halen-ish tone to it??? Cuz that is wat the pickup sounded like to me. It distorts SOOO easily, man, and blues it up easy. And it really sounds nice

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

c'mon guys

i need one of those low output pickups! I had no idea they overdrive so easily. i was sorta getting a van halen like distortion with taht pup, i just loved it! help! this is going to get me one step closer to discovering my tone!

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

If it was a full size Humbucker..it could have been a Seth Lover or a 59. That would be my guess, from what you described. I haven't used the Seth, but I Love the 59.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

JB? PG? Those are above the SD on the site. Did he say it was a PAF type pickup? The Custom is a PAF type pickup and so is the PG...

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

Your various messages have confused the hell out of me. If they guy said he had a George Lynch Screamin' Demon, the you need to get a Screamin' Demon. Sounds pretty easy to me.

But for the rest of it, I'm actually pretty confused as to what you are trying to say.

What kind of guitar do you play? Is it a strat? I'm just confused trying to follow your logic. Hopefully, the Screamin' Demon is what you need. If you have a strat, get the trem version.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

If you want the true PAF tone, go with either the Seth or the Antiquity. I love the Seth Neck...haven't tried the bridge, but bet I would love it.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

sorry if i was confusing you guys

Wat i was trying to say:

-Man i spoke to said that the pickup was above the Screamin Demon on the site listing, which would probably be the Full Shred or Stag Mag--this pickup was a humbucker

-I want to kno how I can get that open, versatile, easily distorted tone (running thru a high gain amp). I have a Custom SH-5 right now, which is too hot for blues and sounds sort of plain clean.

Why would a low output pup distort easier than a high output? Or am I wrong?

Hey man I think he meant "above the george lynch SD" on the description page where it says Pearly Gates: "were wound for the 59 les paul....etc"
It was probably a Pearly Gates! And it seems like you could get some kick ass blues with volume rolled down a bit or with right amp/settings and some decent hard rock considering it's sizzle sound or whatever the description says.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

I second Brinton. The Pearly Gates seems to be the pickup you're looking for. If I recall correctly it's like a PAF with balls. I've never owned one but I've played them before, real nice. "pearly gates" alright, heavenly tone. I'm PRETTY sure that Fender put Pearly gates stock in some of their fat strats. I think I saw it on their website and some models that were hanging at the local stores. So I put two and two together, the pickup you were describing, and the fact that it was in a fender, bingo. I think that's the one.

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

yea xeromus.. they put the pearly gates into the bridge of their usa fat and floyd fat strats... good old lone stars.. nowadays they put the pearly gates plus in the bridge of their fatties

well, if any i'd go with an antiquity or for hotter action the '59

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

i think fender has always used the pg+, even in the lonestar

Re: Paf Pickups!!! Help

could be, i'm not so sure they used the normal PG in the lonestars.. all i know that it was a PG :D

but keeps me thinking.. isnt the PG+ a bit too bright in the ash/alder strats?
