PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

First of all i'm mew here. After years of reading posts on this forum, i have a question for you guys. :headbang:

I play 80's metal mostly (think Priest, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Ratt, early Van Halen...)

My problem has always been to be able to play a fast riff with a super precise and cutting sound while avoiding sounding harsh/fizzy/cold. So i got rid of most of my ceramic pickups.

My quest for a pickup that had a precise sound and some awesome tone to it led me to PAF style pickups.

A year or so ago i bought a Screamin Demon and thought it sounded really amazing through guitar rig or various simulators but was lacking mids and had really agressive trebles through tube amps. I swapped the magnet for and A2 and it's a killer pickup through amps but the mids sound kinda weird i think and it's a bit muddy when playing whith effects.

I also have a Pearly gates wich is a nice compromise but the bass doesn't seem tight enough for fast riffing, on the other hand it gives a killer Van Halen tone/vibe, i really recommend it for a 1984 era sound !

I also have a Dimarzio PAF Pro laying around in front of me. Tried it few years ago but i thought it sounded bland, a bit muddy, not bad, the tone was ok but not great and maybe the mids sounded a bit weird. Should i try it again ?

What do you guys think ? what kind of low/moderate output pickup do you use for metal and heavy music in general ?

PS : I have a maple bodied Warmoth (really heavy and awesome) with an OFR and a rosewood finger board :)

And btw i apologize if my english s**** cause it's not my native language !

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

Are we talking bridge, neck, or both? The Full shred was also the first thing that came to my mind. I've never used the bridge model, but I love the neck for exactly what you are describing.

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

Thanks for your answers, and im talking bridge only, my guitar doesn't even have a neck pickup :)

The full shred seems interesting, what makes it different from a Custom 5 ? They're both 14k/A5. Tried it and hated it. Boomy bass and no guts.

And what are your opinions on the PAF pro ?

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

I think I read somewhere in this forum that a full shred is a custom 5 with two rows of hex screws.
Everytime I see someone mention it I get urges to try it

Yeah i really want to try the '78 but it's not cheap and i can only get one on ebay since the custom shop cannot send pickups where i live :/

Something tells me my A2 Screamin' Demon is more or less the same thing.

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

I've never had a lack of mids issue with the demon, but mine is in an alder super strat. So maybe there's the difference. Maybe try a UOA5?

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

I'm playing that same music in a band setting and I use the following

- Best tones: PG set
- Next Best - JB8
- Then Distortion

I'd have recommended the Disotrtion, but it is ceramic. I'd have said PG, but you tried that. I am NOT on board with Demon/Shread because of bass/mids.

I say go JB8; Tighter bass, calmer but substantial kids, rounder highs.

Re: PAF Pro vs. Pearly Gates vs. Screamin' Demon !?

Thanks a lot for your advices guys ! i'll try A8 into my JB and my Custom and if i have money im really curious to try a full shred.

Maybe i'm not allowed to talk about other pickup brands here but if someone has a PAF pro in the bridge, feel free to tell me what it's like.

EDIT : I finally tried the PAF pro and it stayed 15 minutes in the guitar... It still has the lifeless/dull highs and the weird "wah" mids i remember, those mids are exactly what i'm avoiding with pickups like the Demon or the PG. (think Van Halen) Is it me or all the Dimarzios have that strange wah thing going on ? The only Dimarzio that i ended up keeping is the Super Distortion. All the Duncans sound way more alive and true to my ears !

Put an A8 in your Screamin' Demon. It will retain the tight nature (unlike the A2 magnet) while adding some fat.
You should love it.

BTW, this is a good forum.
No problem discussing Dimarzio or others, as long as it's done in a honest, truthful fashion.
