Page in a Box

Hey there, as the title suggests, I'm looking for a pedal that can get me that early Zeppelin sound(ideally somewhere between RAH and TSRTS). I'm not looking to sound exactly like Page, but I'm looking for something in that area. I'm somewhat torn between going the fuzz route or the OD route. For gear, I'm running a Hot Rod Deville, and looking to get an Epiphone Trad Pro for my Zeppelin needs. My budget is about 150, give or take.

If it helps out, I own an OCD and a Distortion+. I find the mid scoop on the OCD give way to a really mushy and harsh sound when I push it past the realm of OD, the D+ is essentially it's replacement.

Thanks.

Re: Page in a Box

That pedal sounded fantastic. There are a ton of great dirt boxes that give that light plexi-like overdrive/distortion. I use the Plimsoul for all of those sounds. It's fun to listen to Page, Beck, Clapton, and even Dickey and Duane when at one time they were all using Les Paul's into screaming Marshalls. Clapton's "hideaway" Beck's "Let me love you baby" Zep's "what is and what should never be" and anything off the Fillmore recordings all have that sweet, sweet barking plexi sound. That's what I hear when I use the Plimsoul.

Guitar->pedals->amp

The Barber Direct Drive is also very good at dailing tones from that era.

I'm gonna say key best PAge sound ever was the Roland Cube Bassman setting with the EQ just so, and a Custom Custom.

That didn't do all the PAge sounds (Need a Tele for that or a split) and something with an A5. But that is what worked for me.

Re: Page in a Box

A little out of the budget, but if that's not the perfect pedal I don't know what is. Thank you!

Well, I don't know of anything thats very close to the RAH for less money but I can get a decent Page from a ZVex Box of Rock...the RAH is much closer as it was built from the ground up to nail those sounds but the Box of Rock will land you in the ballpark for less coin or just save up and get a used RAH!

Re: Page in a Box

I have both a Catalinbread RAH overdrive pedal and an original Eighties MXR Distortion +. One of these is massively more dynamically responsive than the other.

It should be pointed out that, in order to recreate the Page-style sound, you need to be very well practiced in the Page playing touch.

Suffice it to say that the Catalinbread RAH makes me sound like me aged fifty and the MXR Distortion + makes me sound like me aged eighteen. :(

Absolutely. What a lot of people miss is he set up his guitars to play almost effortlessly - lower action, extra-light strings, etc. And that Herco pick too believe it or not. He has a very light touch.

His phrasing is so idiosyncratic, that's the hardest part. Nobody sounds like Page.
