Hey guys.
I had posted a few of my pics of the few I have painted my self on a site thats kinda like myspace and facebook together :p So any way some dude who lives pretty close to me asked if I would paint his bass for him. He offed to pay me and even drive it down to where I am.

Have you guys ever Painted someone interment for them?
I guess the main reason for this thread is I don't want to **** up on it and have to buy it from the guy. What do you guys think?

Smart ass comments welcome

Re: Painting someone guitar.

Put it in writing what you will deliver and make sure he understands exactly what he's going to get. Get half up front then the balance when completed, don't give it back to him without payment in full.

Re: Painting someone guitar.

keep the price reasonable and the expectations low

you want the customer to be pleasantly surprised not disappointed

Re: Painting someone guitar.

I've painted a lot of stuff for myself and stuff for others. Confidence comes with experience provided you have learned what to do and not do. Patience and mostly pride in your work is key to reaching the point where you can be confident enough to do work for others, and charge for it. I'm a picky bastid with an eye for detail, if I don't like it, I fix it or start over. My first paint jobs covered cost of materials, and maybe I made 5 bucks an hour for myself...I gained a lot of experience (I was 'cheap') and when i got good, I charged a more fair price...good luck, keep it fun and wear a damn respirator...mmmmmkay?

Re: Painting someone guitar.

Trust me...if you even smell a hint of paint, it's going in your lungs...and it don't come back out. Put a mask on, even mixing paint can mess you up. Have fun.

Re: Painting someone guitar.

i've never done one for another person, but I have painted a few of my own.

like others have said, make sure the expectations are clearly set. is he just wanting a different base color? or is it a tricky sunburst or metallic thing he is after?

The latter. Travis did an awesome sparkle finish on a Strat, I believe. I can see why somebody would be interested in his work.

My advice: keep it low key, and refuse to do it if you feel uncomfortable - like if he says the bass belonged to his dead father.
