Asian wood names are so hard to pinpoint.... Back in the day, Yamaha used a blonde lumber they called Nato wood. It sounded great, looked nice - I have no idea what it really is. Agathis was used a lot by Dean (and others), but they called it mahogany - it's not. Pretty sure LTD/ESP would be no help either.

Nato is an Asian species of mahogany; I have no idea what Agathis is.

Nato is an Asian species of mahogany.

Wrong. Nato is not a swietenia - might look like mahogany, but is not even related.
Agathis is actually an evergreen... a softwood. There are multiple varieties, all referred to as araucariaceae taxonomically.

This is why it is so important to use the correct Latin names for wood identifying.

That's certainly possible. I've seen Nato being sold as Asian mahogany; but that doesn't mean that a certain amount of hand-waving wasn't involved.

Specs SUGGEST "alder (solid colors), mahogany (see-thru colors)"... though they call it honey starburst, vs. other finishes actually named see-thru this or that

Sure as hell don't look like mahogany

Agathis, commonly known as kauri or dammar, is a genus of 22 species of evergreen tree.

If we're being correct in our botany, a conifer or 'gymnosperm' is what is termed a softwood.....which as you correctly point out the family Araucariaceae and the genus Agathis are part of.

There are plenty of evergreen angiosperms or flowering plants as well as deciduous, the grouping called 'hardwoods'. It is quite incorrect to merely differentiate through leaf fall.
