Parker PM20 finished (PG set, partial coil cut, passive midrange)

Hey all,

Just thought I would show off my latest project. I got this axe for a song and decided to throw some unpotted Pearly Gates in it.
I have always loved Seth Lovers and was hoping for a similar tasty sound, owing to the microphonics and metal covers. Glad to say it's mission accomplished! Tone is QUITE similar actually, just a hair more aggressive (as advertised). This is a very expressive set of pickups that covers a lot of range! The bridge pickup IS bright as everyone seems to point out, but not as thin as a Seth (which was a weak point IMO).

For wiring, I tried partial coil cuts with trim pots to see if there is an ideal value to use. Turns out I prefer the sound of full cut. When using the full 10k or even half, the sound is not different enough to my ears to bother with. I'll experiment some more with those lower values before deciding to remove the trim pots.

The midrange cut is nifty but I will experiement with the cap/resistor since I'm not convinced they are doing much. I used a 0.047 uF cap since I could not find a 0.039. It definitely adds a clarity that the humbuckers don't have on their own and it makes the split tones a bit more spanky. FWIW I wired the primary & secondary of the TL021 together to get more inductance.

Wow, very nice! I always loved Parkers, too. I bet it sounds great. Can we hear it?

Man aside from being shy about my chops, I'm not sure how to post audio. Guess I could use my phone for video? Anyway, I ripped out the linear tone pot and got the log one in: MUCH better!

I am losing too much treble as I roll down the mid cut, so I really need to tweak the resistor/cap values. Wish I knew exactly what each is doing and why Torres/Rothstein use the values they do! I suppose experimenting is the best way to find out for myself...

Figuring out what other people use should only be a starting point. For some, they are bothered by it more than others. That mid cut idea is unique. Does it just scoop out all of the mids?

Well it's taking out something as soon as I flick the switch at a frequency that I can't put my finger on. This already is a helpful tone, but as I roll down the knob, I am not loving the loss of highs, so I'm not just hearing a basic mid scoop. I want to get to the bottom of this because my other version (including the "boost" portion) doesn't behave like this. Maybe the other cap & resistor hanging off the other pot lug contribute to the overall tuning of the thing?
