I was just asked to design a partial capo to cover only the E, A and D strings. Is there anything out there already?
I was thinking maybe taking a Dunlop trigger type and splitting the rubber padding. Or do the same with the C-clamp style. The overhang worries my the most because I think the capo will want to dip toward the treble side and not leave enough wiggle room for the uncapo'd strings to vibrate freely. An extension that would go past the treble side on top and bottom pieces and would lay on each other to lock in place is one idea, but it is important for the guitar to stay reasonable playable in the registers before the capo on uncapo'd strings too.
The thing has to be 100% removable. The traditional methods of hammering hooks into the fretboard like done on banjos wouldn't work here, he is not a gentle player and would probably rip his fingertips. Plus it's a 12-string guitar which only makes matters worse.
Thanks!
