Parting with my baby...

I'm dropping off my beloved 1978 Les Paul Custom for a fret job today... I feel like I'm sending my kid off to Summer Camp!!! I don't even have kids!!! I've never been without this guitar since I bought it 14 years ago and now it's gonna be gone for a month!!!

How do I cope???

I can't play the Jazzmaster... I'll feel like I'm cheating on the Paul!!

Looks like you'll have to buy another LP (Do any of the online people do the thing where you can send it back after a month if you don't like it?, that could be a good alternative)

A MONTH??? Jeezus, the tech must be really backed up, when I still had my shop I was always able to get almost anything not requiring finish work out in under a week (assuming parts availability)..... Or are you sending it somewhere far away?

Good god, thats a crappy turn around time.

Re: Parting with my baby...

I've needed a fret job for a while now and I was really picky on who I chose. I will gladly wait a month to be sure the job is done right... a fret job in my opinion is pretty "skill" intensive and that's something I don't want to be associated with a "rush" job. I'm going out of town next week so this was the best time to drop it off and yes he is pretty backed up.

This guy is a full-fledged luthier and a guy I work with has been going to him for 18 years now... so I feel pretty good about it...

Here's his site if anyone in Mass is looking...

I'll be sure to give a review in a month!

Re: Parting with my baby...

Sooper, just to clarify: Yes, fretwork is labor intensive, it´s essentially one full (work)day´s work, then the check and setup on the next day.....

I was just surprised that he would be backed up that far that, that´s all, I definitely don´t want to comment on anybody´s work that I haven´t seen personally ;)

Re: Parting with my baby...

Fret work is very tedious, I have done many fret jobs. If you have delt with him before than a month is worth It I suppose. Thats one of those jobs that has to be done right.
A month though??? :laugh2: :laugh2:

This is just me, I would have an Crap with my shop was backed up that far. Its good on one hand but, In my mind I wouldnt be doing good customer service. I firmly belive in quick turn around times.

Re: Parting with my baby...

My 1976 LP Deluxe was in the shop for 9 months once.... They had to rebuild the neck..... it had some serious problems and they had to take the fingerboard off and re-do the neck joint and build a new fingerboard.... re-spray the neck.... The guitar is like new to play.. Durying that 9 months i made up my mind that i would always have more then one guitar..... It was the only guitar i had at that time and that was long time to go without it. Out of parts from local stores i threw together a cheap strat to get me through the 9 months...

Saddly that LP is no longer original.... not by a mile! But i'm a Who Fan and even Townshends LP Deluxe that he hangs onto has had a repaired neck.. Pete has only hung onto one of his LP Deluxes from the 70's... It's the one that he throws around at the end of the famous Won't Get Fooled Again from the Kids Are Alright Movie.. He smashed it later in 1979 in Brighton and had it repaired... Still keeps that one and the rest have been given away or sold.

Re: Parting with my baby...

I feel your pain. My baby is going to be gone for a week for a fret dress, new nut and saddle replacement. She's my only one too.

The tech at the shop said I'd be lucky to get another dressing out of those frets, and it's the first one I'm having done. I'm a heavy handed player, though. Maybe cheap fret wire? Is there such a thing? I've only had the guitar for two years.

Re: Parting with my baby...

yeah, IIRC fretwire from aftermarket manufacturers (dunlop et al) is much harder and more durable than the stock stuff fitted on most guitars.. i think it's because its slightly easier and quicker to fit ;)

and of course there's always stainless steel frets.. but they must be total bitches to fit?
