Partscaster Pickup Choices

Hey Guys,

Just looking for some recomendations on pickups for my soon to be ordered warmoth partscaster.

I currently have a maton Mastersound MS500 with a SD 59 in the bridge. I love the sound of this guitar and would like to get as close to it as i possibly can. I would use another 59, but currently for a nice distoreted tone I push the signal harder by using a tubescreamer as a clean boost into the front end. (I run my amps preamp a bit lower to stop it getting mushy)

Im going to be building a telecaster with a TOM bridge, Alder body, Maple neck and rosewood fretboard. I would like to get a pickup in the bridge that is "Vintage" sounding like the 59, but with a higher output.

That being said I want to avoid a massivley over compressed metal tone and get something thats close to my Maton with the tubescreamer as a clean boost but without having to use any boosts beforehand.

I've been looking at the Custom 5 as it's an alnico 5 like the 59 and has a similar tone profile. I play a few varied styles of music, but mainly rock. I was to simplify it down to a band's "tone" i'd be after it would be the Foo fighters.

Are there any others that would suit what Im after or am I on the right track with the Custom 5?

Im summation

- Looking for a slightly hotter version of the 59 Bridge
- Music styles are Rock, Blues and Rock Pop
- Alder Body, Maples Neck and Rosewood Fretboard.

Thanks!

Re: Partscaster Pickup Choices

Sounds about right. If you have the capital, you can always get the custom shop to wind you a hotter 59 though.

Re: Partscaster Pickup Choices

Sounds like the 59/custom hybrid would probably be an option.

Thanks Guys.

I was looking at the 59/custom as my original choice but was slightly put off by people mentioning that it was "Unique" sounding and since the 59 is rather scooped the mids were much higher.

That being said I'm sure boosting my 59 currently with a tubescreamer is adding a mid hump even when the tone is all the way down.

In regards to DC resistances, how does it scale. I'm assuming 14k vs 7k isn't double the output?

I did think of the custom shop, but I'm a little tight on money atm =)

Re: Partscaster Pickup Choices

get a pearly gates with an a8, or you could have the custom shop for an overwound pearly gates, at around 10k with a roughcast a5 magnet

Re: Partscaster Pickup Choices

I think the Custom 5 is a plausible choice, but my first thought was also the 59/Custom hybrid.

I'm not a fan of the custom 5, 59 or the 59/custom because they're all too scooped for my taste.

Re: Partscaster Pickup Choices

The tone profile of the 59/custom shows the mids are as prevalent as the treble unlike the C5 or 59. Do you find this not to be the case when playing it?

Whole Lotta Humbucker

To me, it fits in tone right after the 59, and right before the Custom. There are mids, but the chart is sort of deceiving. It is dynamic like the 59, but with more power. It sounds like exactly what you are after- it is a remarkable pickup.
