Partscaster Problems

Hi all, apologies for the slightly long-winded first post :P

So I've recently been considering starting a Partscaster project, but I've hit a little snag. As I'm a complete newbie when it comes to wiring selector switches and pots (though I have done some pickup changes before) I decided I'd get myself one of these handy little prewired harnesses. The problem is that they are only available with 250k pots, but the pickups I was planning on using were the Hot Rails and Classic Stacks in the middle and neck, inspired by this video, though he notes he's using 500k pots.

Will these pickups not work well with 250ks? If not, can anyone recommend a similar pickup set that would work better with them?

Oh, should probably mention; I play a lot of classic heavy rock along the lines of Maiden, Priest, Metallica etc, but was aiming for some versatility.

Re: Partscaster Problems

Have you looked at the available options for a completed pickguard with the pickups of your choice?

Re: Partscaster Problems

Thanks for the advice. I did look into the Dave Murray set, almost balked at the price until I totaled up the parts individually, turned out it's not actually that much more expensive. The BYOP interests me though, also came across the Hot Stack, will one of those in the bridge with the Classic Stacks work together better?

Re: Partscaster Problems

The Rails pickups (and the Stacks) were designed as direct replacements for Strat pickups without changing any other parts (you can change the pot values of course). So, I'd start with 250k pots at first, and then change them (just replace each wire, one at a time) if you need to. BTW, the Hot STack still sounds a bit like a Strat, while the Hot Rails certainly doesn't.

Re: Partscaster Problems

Good to know, thanks. Took a listen to the Hot Stack demo, really like the lead tone but the rhythm tone is lacking something to me. Trying to settle on a bridge pickup now, would a JB Jr be more versatile than the Hot Rails?

Re: Partscaster Problems

I think so. The hot rails is gain city and the JB jr seems to get organic sounds.

Re: Partscaster Problems

A JB Jr would certainly do more. I can't say that it sounds exactly like a real JB, as I am not a huge fan, but it is certain'y more scooped, and if you do anything with any gain at all or play through a Marshall-esque amp, it works very well. Also look at the Little 59, for a more scooped, vintage humbucker sound, that is even more versatile.
