PATB-2 or JB

Re: PATB-2 or JB

So not a lot of love for the JB huh? I always thought everybody raved about it.

On another note, is the PATB-2 bright enough? I don't like warm tones and want something very aggressive. I'll probably shy away from the PATB-1 simply cause it's only moderate output. I like my pickups hot so they sing.

Just checking.

Sam

The PATB1 has about the same output as the JB, maybe a bit hotter. The PATB1 is more "even" sounding though, whereas the JB is more "obnoxious". The PATB2 is only a bit higher in output than the PATB2, but I remember it as being thicker sounding while also having more high-end presence than the PATB1. Given that you're not looking for warm tones, I'd definitely recommend trying a JB and taking it from there.

Re: PATB-2 or JB

Yeah I'm thinking that the PATB's might be a little too warm and smooth for me. I'd definitely like to play one but I don't think it's the pickup for this guitar after doing some research. I love the 80's tones and I think the JB would do it pretty well.

Now to search ebay . . .

Thanks

Re: PATB-2 or JB

I think that was directed at bluesman. But I openly admit that I knock the JB every time it comes up.

Thank you.

After reading so many posts about other players disliking the bright tones of the JB & ceramic magnets, I feel that I can speak up also. I didn't invent the JB terms "ice pick" & "dentist drill." Excuse me if I think that's funny. I've even made a few recommendations about ceramic magnets & JB's to metal players who want a bright tone. I've said numerous times that "my preference" is bright neck HB's, so the A2's lack of treble & loose low end don't work for me, but do work for others in some guitars. I've said that the A2's shortcomings in the neck become virtues in the bridge position. I've also said that some of the world's best guitarists played Fenders, and they sounded great (Hendrix, Blackmore, Healey, Trower, etc), and that my dislike for Strats comes from hoards of local players that have them EQ'd with unGodly amounts of treble. I also try to make it understood that these comments are said in jest, and have often pointed out that Gibson-design guitars have their share of faults. I like nothing more than to joke back & forth with Strat players. Nothing they say hurts my feelings, & I don't intend to hurt theirs. Everybody who gets it laughs. Nothing really radical here, that you haven't seen many times before I joined the forum. Don't single me out.

Since this thread started with: "What do you guys think?" concerning the PATB-2 or JB, I got the impression that r65150 was looking for opinions & that we were encouraged to give them, and I didn't see anyone or any opinions were to be excluded. My response was short & to the point. You could look at anyone's history of posts (lots of equally short responses), & accuse them of being biased & negative towards a number of things. The entire forum is opinions, and not all of them are complimentary you know.

If Hanumanlangur wants to see things in the worst way, it's his right. But then again he could loosen up a bit. "Why should anyone take me seriously", or maybe, why is he taking things too seriously? I have been a mentor to many guys looking for warm blues/rock tones, so I'm doing something right. If I make a joke or wisecrack once in a while (oh no!), chill out. To quote a line in a movie: "Lighten up Francis."

Re: PATB-2 or JB

PATB 2. The JB is basically (IMO) only good for solos. The low end is flabby on Rhythm work and the midrange can be nasty in certain woods.

+1 on this account of the JB.

Re: PATB-2 or JB

Read my sig!

PATB's are just different animals..
If you ask "JB or PATB-2?" ,is like asking "What do you prefer....a VW Golf or a Porsche GT3?"...
The answer is obvious ,if your goal is the Roar!

Re: PATB-2 or JB

Even though I'm still in the honeymoon stages with it, I'll add a vote for the Crazy 8...still a PATB pickup, more expensive (CS pickup), but A8 magnet FTW! :D

I don't find the PATB1 to be warm. It has a lower mid punch which some may call warmth, but that's not what I would call it. More like thickness. It's hard to classify the PATB1 because most pickups will either have accented lower or upper mids, leading to the terms like "warmth," but the PATB1 has pushed lower mids AND singing, saturated highs. If I were you I'd try the PATB2 first before the JB, because it will not be difficult to sell if you choose to and it may give you the pickup experience that you're searching for. It's always easy to find a JB floating around, but the PATBs are a rare breed that must be experienced firsthand and could give you everthing you want and more.

Yes, lots of used JB's for sale (that should tell you something). No shortage of disatisfied players, but then just as many guys love them. But they should not be put into so many guitars, as evidenced by all the ones on the used market. SD makes a lot of great PU's, and they should be in the spotlight as much or more than the infamous JB.

...if you listen carefully, you can almost hear all the other SD pickups crying out, "pick me!, pick me!!"
