PATB Questions

Hey guys,

For a while I've been looking to move away from the low-output PAFs I've been using for ages. I've loved the PAF neck models, but I really want a thicker, beefier sound and a bit more compression for the bridge. With that in mind I replaced one of my bridge humbuckers with a hotter PAF-style pickup (still vintage voiced), and while taken on its own it does sound better than the old bridge, it now sounds very different to the neck (I guess mainly due to its compression). It's really important for me to have well-matched bridge and neck pickups because I use my selector switch a lot mid-song, and mid-solo, and it doesn't suit my purposes to have the tones vary hugely.

Anyway, I use alder-bodied 25.5" scale superstrats, with bolt-on maple necks and maple fingerboards. Despite my love of superstrats, I like lush, thick LP-type tones, so I've been looking at the PATB-3 bridge pickup. My question is: will the PATB-1n match it well (in terms of output, brightness, and overall tonality)?

To give a benchmark: I like how a Screamin' Demon bridge and Jazz neck match, or how a Full Shred set matches, but I really dislike the difference in tone between a Dimebucker bridge and 59 neck.

I hope my question isn't too confusing. I find it hard to be precise when talking tone. Thanks in advance!

Re: PATB Questions

Speaking from personal experience - yes...the PATB-1n is THE match for any of the PATB bridge pickups - the -2, -3, and the Crazy 8. I've played them all, and they complement each other very nicely. I'm actually trying to procure a PATB-1n/Crazy 8 combo for my Schecter C-1 Classic right now because I'm a huge PATB fan.

Another cool thing about the PATB pickups is that the PATB pole pieces kind of give the magnetic field more "spread", if that makes any sense. Don't get me wrong - distorted they can be as big and ballsy sounding as you want or need them to be, they can hold their own in that dept. just fine. But on top of that, they clean up very nicely too, and give nice useable clean sounds. The PATB design has a really cool way of softening the magnetic field ever so slighly, just enough to give the tone that sense of "touch" - they're very dynamic and expressive pickups.

I can't say enough good things about the PATB line - the only way to improve upon them, IMHO, is to come out with more models...at least there's always magnet swapping to try it yourself...

Hope this helps...

I can agree with this 1000% myself!

I LOVE PATB's.
