Pawn shop Jackson question (Zerb?)

I've always kinda wanted a Randy Rhodes (sp?) model, just for playin around with pickups, setups and that kind of thing. Plus they're cool, plus I don't have any money to sink into a real nice one right now (and don't really need to since I already have a couple of nice ones).

Anyway, today I ran into a Professional series, Black RR. It's a bolt-on, registered Floyd, Jackson pickups. Rosewood fretboard. It's had some abuse as the shiny black finish is now looking matte, plus a small chunk missing from the tip of the upper "wing." Frets look a little tarnished maybe. They were asking 300 bucks!! I'm thinking "no way... my professional dinky, in great shape with Duncans is probably worth 300." I'm guessing this is circa 1997 or 1998.

What d'ya think? I was about to say, "100 bucks and I'll take it off your hands."

Also, I was considering cutting away a couple of inches from the upper wing, since I've always considered those dangerous weapons :laugh2: .

Any problems with that?

Hmm Zerb will know more than I on such matters, but were the inlays sharkfin or dot?

Those fetch about 250-300 used on ebay, talk em down!

Good luck finding one of those used WITHOUT a chunk out of the top fin

IMHO, that's way too much. You should be able to get one in really nice shape for that. I think most of the Professionals were only around $400 or so new.

If you're seeing Dots then my first impression was probably correct ... with Jackson pickups and the licenced floyd (should look like the Schaller ones) sounds like they have a Performer series Rhoads, probably with a Professional truss plate.

I wouldn't shell out 300 for one (if it is a performer)

I asked him about an import Jackson a few weeks ago, and he said he didn't know much about them.

I meant to say Performer in my post above. I had a PS-4, and it was cool for a few years, then the neck totally went to sh*t. The Floyd copy wouldn't stay in tune for anything. Pickups are garbage, as well, and I believe one of the tuners basically self destructed after not too long.

Oh man, that stinks. My Professional series is doing fantastic to this day. Neck is great, and the licensed Floyd rarely goes out of tune. I guess I got a "Wednesday" guitar. It sounds great with a JB/Jazz combo.

The Professional series from the early-mid nineties are great guitars, and are up to par with a lot of the USA Jackson's. From there it gets cloudy. Were the Japanese guitars temporarily discontinued, or was the Professional line discontinued only to be replaced with lower end Japanese guitars.
The Professional series from those years are great alternatives as compared to the prices of the USA stuff.

But if Mr. Zerberus would pop in.....

I absolutely agree. My MIJ Dinky is on equal footing with my USA, playability wise. Some days it even feels easier than the USA - the necks a tad thinner and no paint on the back. Doesn't feel quite as solid, though. Still, I'd stack that MIJ Dinky up against any other pointy guitar in the under 1,000 price range any day.

thought of sanding the finish off the neck? or are you looking at retaining the full value?

once i get my MIJ dinky, i'll be in guitar heaven hehe...



oh.. Zerb is majorly busy with work and other projects as far as i know

Naw. I got used to the paint. Now, I like it. I don't think I'll ever sell it, but I suppose you never know.
