Paying too much for a guitar

Not sure if everyone's familiar with the hybrid MIJ 60s series, but there's a stratocaster I've had my eye on with all the specs I've ever wanted. However, incluidng shipping and (probable) tax its starting to get into the $1300.

Am I just being silly? I could get a mod shop version for $1700, or if I wait awhile, I've seen similar custom shop versions from $2000 upwards(ish). But those are pretty large monetary increments :(

Re: Paying too much for a guitar

Which model are you looking at from the Hybrid series?

EDIT: I see you said Strat. Color preference?

Re: Paying too much for a guitar

$1,300 isn’t a lot for a guitar. I paid $900 for my Ibanez bass 32 years ago.

People just got used to cheap Chinese guitars. Lol

Warmoth? Way over priced IMO, but nicely made.
You can buy a hand made guitar for that much.

You might be GAS'in hard for this Stratocaster but my suggestion is to wait and buy it used in a few months (if it is a new production guitar). There will be plenty of good deals for the same guitar, in immaculate condition, with the 'used' price instead of you taking the big financial hit. For me, $1300 is a lot for a non-American made Fender guitar. I wouldn't even consider buying it brand new. I'd either take that same amount of cash and buy a top of the line used Fender, or again, wait several months and buy the one you want at a discounted rate.

Agreed, especially when I paid $400 for my favorite guitar, an ‘87 USA Strat.

However, I got that deal because I wasn’t actively shopping for one, but rather had a deal fall in my lap. When I was shopping for a Classic Vibe Tele, I wound up happy with what I paid, but it was much closer to the going rate.

Sherwood green. The hybrid has quite a lot of features I look for - satin neck (usually custom shops are nitro finished), locking tuners (which I always put on regardless), 9.5 radius. I've seen combinations of features like that, but usually they're in a higher price bracket.

True, and usually I would. These are limited edition though and only in Europe & Japan. Ive seen used ones and the knock is strangely, <$100 is any. Funnily enough the one I'm looking at is cheaper new than the used ones I've seen.

You'd bloody think they'd be more options in Sherwood other than Squiers and (starting at) a 62 reissue...

Re: Paying too much for a guitar

If you really like it I say break all the rules and to hell with fiscal prudence...
It ticks all your boxes and seems like a cool instrument and maybe overpriced a little but you get the real thing, it's what you wanted, you didn't have to wait and hunt down a used one where you don't know who's molested it and how...
I don't know your financial situation and maybe I'm just projecting cuz there's some gear I really want and can't afford..
And if you ended up not liking it you're gonna take a hit flipping it
But dang it cool guitars are cool guitars and sometimes for various reasons not related directly to build quality, they cost a lot. Sometimes it's the name on the headstock, sometimes cuz it's limited, sometimes it's cuz you're getting it shipped brand spanking new from the country of its origin...
I dunno where's the fun in "I won't pay a cent more than it's worth in the used market"! Live on the edge and go get that shining thing

If it is over budget, than it is over budget. Don't buy it- get a cheaper guitar and mod it one part at a time.

You say Warmoth is overpirced?

I do have couple of parts lists calculated with Warmoth prices and that sums up around 1000$ for all parts of fully custom guitar. Including painted ready to go body.

I don't think that's expensive.

You'd probably be able to build guitar with ~700$ with cheaper quality parts (new), but then you'll have greatly limited options. Of course if you scavenge parts you want used it's much less than that, but then it may take anything up to 2-4 years to get exact parts you want (that's what it took for me to find reasonably priced soft V neck).

Comparing to chinese manufacturers on the other hand is hardly fair comparison...

I was gonna ask for clarification on some things, but I guess I don’t know what I’m talking about so I won’t bother.
