Pearley Gates and Alnico II Pro, for Les Paul Bridge?

Been back and forth between these to pickups for the bridge of my Paul for a while. Haven trouble settling on one. Going thru a Marshall Jubilee head int a vintage 30 loaded cab. My band plays blues, classic rock and a little hard rock.

My fav early tones are Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Thin Lizzy.....etc.
Just about any 60s and 70's les paul player with kick ass tone.
Help me weigh out the pros and cons........

Neither one is a bad choice. I'd go with the A2P myself, and put a RC A2 in it.

The PG is my choice. It has a bit more sizzle to the top and upper mids, helping it to cut through a bit better in a live situation.

Re: Pearley Gates and Alnico II Pro, for Les Paul Bridge?

Since the Alnico II Pro is not a true PAF style pickup and the POG is it's easily going to get you closet to old PAF tones...

You would put RC A2 in your pizza if you could digest it! :naughty:

Re: Pearley Gates and Alnico II Pro, for Les Paul Bridge?

I thought the AII pro was based on an old warm PAF pickup?

Not really...the alnico II Pro bucker is actually based on the alnico II Pro single coil more than anything...

Even though the A2Pro is in the PAF output range the tone is not really PAF to me much at all...59's, Seth's, Ant's, PG's...those are PAF clones...

I hear the A2Pro more like a modern day version of the PAF, sort of an idealized PAF if you will...

K thnks.
Put the PG in and tweaked it thru my rig, sounds very good, playing out this weekend will report back.......

Re: Pearley Gates and Alnico II Pro, for Les Paul Bridge?

Those are two very different sounding PAF's.

PG - old school bright, gnarly, upper mids with sweet top that is bright and cuts.

A2P - old school bass, mids, and a super fat hight end that can rock and grind.

Slash vs Billy G.

Both are fantastic sounds, and IMO the PG is the more versatile. I can tone knob down the PG high end, but I can't ratchet up the A2P. But you have to pick one side of the spectrum to start with.

I'll call PG - but I'm biased.

Always been back and forth with these 2, beauty of a good soldering iron, I'm a Nascar mechanic when it comes to switching pickups!!!!!!
Playing the fri and sat this weekend, so I will try it again, last gig I was pissed with the high end thing-------will tone it down----like the feel and output-----
Really like my SH-5 in my other Paul, but again a differant animal altogether.
