Pearly gates a2 or a5?

For a dark, muddy LP, what say you? I'm gonna pick up a bridge PG and for the same price, I could get a standard one, or the A5 version. Any thoughts?

Re: Pearly gates a2 or a5?

The standard Pearly Gates bridge has the fat you'd expect of an A2 mag, but is surprisingly bright and has a good clarity. I'd get the standard A2 PG. If you want to tweak you can always get a magnet for a couple bucks.

I say try it and live with it with an A2 first, for a couple of weeks.

Standard PG is fine in a dark LP. It was one of the brightest Humbuckers I tried in both my LP Studio and my SG Standard.

Re: Pearly gates a2 or a5?

All good suggestions so far, in general.

But to give you a better more specific suggestion, I'd like to know what bridge pup you have in there now that gives you a "dark, muddy" tone. If you currently have a normally bright pup in there and you're still getting a muddy tone, then I'd suggest the A5 Pearly. If you've got a pup that is on a par with an Invader, then I'd suggest the A2 Pearly (and that may even be too bright by comparison).

So, what pup do you currently have?

Re: Pearly gates a2 or a5?

Go with the A2. That's a big part of what makes the PG a PG. It is bright in the bridge.

A wolfetone Marshallhead. Very thick. I was surprised how little definition it has, even with messing w heights and different amps!

Yes, considering what you've got in there now, the A2 PG will make a dramatic difference.
