Pearly Gates-Anyone split 'em ? Sound?

:laugh2: Hi there,

I pretty much know I want to build a Tele Deluxe with two h-buckers. I am still torn between large wide-range, that probably can't be split...or will suck when split.

OR

Pearly Gates....listened to sound bytes....drooling over that creamy tone.

Wondering if anyone in the forum is using em and has split them too?

A tele deluxe with Pearly Gates that is splittable into a good strat sound might be very, very sweet.

You guys/gals have always come through for me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thor
p.s. I am meeting with a guitar tech in a week about my too bright strat to discuss options and thanks to you...I can mention changing the pots as a strategy. Thanks million:dance:

I use the PGn and Duncan Custom together in a dual humbucker Strat and both of those pickups split beautifully into a very useable single coil sound.

Really, the nicest single coil tones I've heard from a neck HB.

Yes, the PG neck is amazing - creamy, thick, nice tops

The PG bridge, on the other hand, is blah to my ears.

I have this set in my Dean Evo Premium (Czech made with real flame maple top and coil split pull/push) - to be honest, I'm not that impressed with the single-coil sound of the neck or bridge. IMO, it sounds shrill and thin, but then again, I've never been impressed with any split'em humbucker sound.

The PGn sounds great split!

For the Bridge I like a slightly hotter pickup like the Alnico 59/Custom Hybrid, Custom Shop 78/ EVH or the Custom Custom... all three of those sound great split...

I'm with B2R and Lew -- I've got the PGn in the neck of my '77 tele and it sounds VERY nice split. I almost prefer the split tone to its full sound; it has an interesting character that makes it fun to play by itself -- I like the PGn split almost as much as I liked the Jerry Donahue SC bridge I had in the guitar a while back. (I'd try to be more expressive but I havn't recovered from Artie's description of the CoolRails as a "slurpee with gin" in another thread.)
