pearly gates plus mag swapping

I have this old 76 Ibanez deluxe 59r Les Paul I have had since 1981, it currently has a PG+ and 59n reverse polarity it had super 70's, MJ 59, 59/cust and now the PG+ it out of all of them is almost perfect but a bit too much high end, I have thought about swapping mags to an A2 or possibly an A8 out of a broken super 70 I have OR should I try 250k or 300k pots? The guitar is African mahogany, sen ash top with an all maple neck

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

I think the PG+ with an A2 magnet is a great idea. I'd love to hear how this turns out.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

The more I think about it that is what I'm going to do......I actually have 3 or 4 other sets out of Big Apple strats maybe try the A8 in one too.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

I have taken apart and fixed many pickups, never swapped mags but I know how the only thing I don't know is what are the best ones to buy? how do you figure out polarity? is it marked? a compass? I have some cheap donlis a-2 humbuckers I bought just for the cream bobbins should I just pull one out of them?

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

You test the new mag against what's already in there.

Demanic-
To be clear, you mean the EDGES should attract, yes?

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

I always check the new magnet against the top or bottom of the old one while it's still part way out of the pickup.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

Pickup magnetic poles are the long edge, so I check by ensuring the long narrow edge attracts to the long narrow edge of the mag still halfway out of the pickup.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

beubrummels, Demanic,
Yes, I meant the long edge, not the small edge at the top of the mag. Slightly off topic, I got my very first accidental reverse magnet in a WLH last month. I have bought many many pickups from Duncan over the years, more than I want to count, and this is the only time that's happened. It was already in the bridge when I tried a jazz neck with it, it did the Peter Green thing, so since I still had the neck pickup out, I tried another jazz neck, and same thing. I'll have to take it out one of these days and see if it was marked incorrectly with that mark they use for north, or if it was just put in wrong with the mark correctly placed. Never cared for that out of phase sound.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

I have a custom shop 78 model that is reverse phase. I bought used so I don’t know if it was intentional.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

Yeah,
Mine was brand new, all the correct tape on the box, pristine. No big deal. I have lots of time on my hands.

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

My vote is change the pots, I have one and love it in my Strat. It was designed for 250 pots IMO

Re: pearly gates plus mag swapping

I ended up going with the A2 in the PG+, worked out really well it shifted the EQ to bring out more mids and smoothed the high's a bit, it actually sounds much like the potted burstbucker 3 in one of my other LP's.
