Pearly Gates vs 59?

In a Les Paul which would be brighter the Pearly Gates Bridge or 59B, I really like the 59 but at times the bridge can be bright. Would the PG be a bit sweeter because of the increased mids or would be about the same................ I'm tempted to just buy the PGn/PGb and try them out!

Re: Pearly Gates vs 59?

Mids, I find really push the treble too, turning my mids high on the amp seems to hurt my ears more if my treble is up. That said, I hear Pearly Gates kick ass, so try em, see what you think, eq a little and off you go.

Re: Pearly Gates vs 59?

If "sweet" is what you want the A2 Pro is what you want. As far as bright, it really depands how you define your terms. The 59 has more true high end but the PG has a bump in the 2-4k range that definitely gives it more bite than the 59.

Re: Pearly Gates vs 59?

Like TheArchitect pointed out the 59 has more true treble but do to a spike in the upper mids the PG has more sting...it is NOT brighter but it does cut better through a mix, however I would not describe the PG as sweet...it can be but it is far better at dishing out rude PAF style tone...if sweet and smooth is what you're after look at the ALnico II Pro's or Seth Lovers...

Thanks guys I will look into the APII as well but isnt the PG hotter than the APII, I dont want to go to weak in output!

Re: Pearly Gates vs 59?

The aph-1 is really sweet but doesn`t cut thru in the mix as the 59/pg or pg.
Lets put it this way: the other guitarist in my band have antiqutys in his prs, when i`m using the 59/pg in my guitars they really gets a presence that cuts for my leads. i tried the aph-1 last band rehersal and i had a hard time cuting thru.
I really love the sound of the aph-1 but it doesn`t do it for me in my band.
I think it`s great for ryhthm stuff. yeah...i know slash use it lol

Only so very slightly you would never know the difference

Re: Pearly Gates vs 59?

I got to mess around with the 59n/59b a little more and made some adjustments so these may not go anywhere just yet! Few of things I did was to go back to 50's wiring, changed the RS (Hovland)guitarcaps over to Orange Drop(716P) .015 on the neck and a .022 on the bridge.

I feel the combination of all the above made a huge difference in the way these pickups now sound and react to volume changes!

Thanks for all the input guys, much apreciated! I still would like to try the PG anyway!

+1 PGn/CCb As much SWEET and CUT as you want!

I'd say a PG is a nice combo of sweet from the A2 and cut/bite from the upper mid boost. It clearly isn't loved by all - why I'm not sure. Rev Billy G. never seems harsh on the treble side - or any other side for that matter!
