Re: Peavey 5150 combo or Carvin Legacy Combo?
I saw on that other thread that about Dave's guitar shop in Wis, they had each one at $600 and I think that is a good price (correct me if I'm wrong). I've heard and played the 5150 and I do love it, but I've never touched a Legacy before, any opinions?
I am using a Valvetronic which I have really enjoyed but I would like to have one amp that can rip my face off and scare the neighbors a bit.
Legacies are retardedly loud. I have to use an Airbrake with mine in order to keep my stage volume manageable. If you're looking for a neighbor scarer, this is a good one!
I want these too basically because I love Vai and Eddie and I would like to own a piece of their gear. I'm leaning towards the Legacy because they are more unique and I'm guessing the cleans are better then the 5150.
I searched the forums but I didn't see many opinions of the Legacy.
The Legacy and the 5150 both have their quirks that make them both kind of unique in their own right. The clean tones on the Legacy are excellent, IMO.
I seem to remember the Legacy being referred to as like a modded marshall or something akin to that, I'd think the 5150 would sound totally different...at least much less open than the Legacy, judging from the bands who use them/Vai's tone.
The overdrive channel on the Legacy doesn't really remind me of a distinct Marshally sound, and the cleans have some Fender taste but aren't quite really that direction. It's got a sound thats kind of it's own thing, and the tones in all cases are big, bold expressive, fat, and clear.
legacy hands down smoother distortion and an actual usable clean sound!!!
just ask B2D, I played his Legacy half stack at a jam and I was florred

Yeah, the Legacy is fatter and smoother, and having had experience with Virtual Kevorkian's very well-tuned 5150 in the studio, I can say the distortion is sharper, a bit more compressed, and tighter, among other things.
The Legacy will give you more tone options.
The pots on the Legacy are 1M-ohm sealed units, so they don't interact with each other the way lots of tube amps will and the range of control is wider.
I wouldn't promote either one to sour your choice.
Go A/B the legacy. The 5150 has a tone all of its own, and if that's what you're looking for not much else will get it.
I used both a 5150 and a Legacy pretty evenly on my band's demo. The whoel thign was engineered and recorded by Virtual Kevorkian, as well.
www.myspace.com/evergrove has the songs. Red Hot Summer is all Legacy (rhythm and lead) and I've had Enough is all 5150 for my guitars, which are the main ones you hear. The guitars and the overdrive pedal (a Maxon) were also the same too. The Maxon was used as a boost to get a little more push out of the sound but what you hear is pretty accurate.
I've had both running through the same cabinet with the same axe and pedals... I still prefer the 5150.
The Legacy has a richer, more complex sound, but that's not what you buy a 5150 for \m/.
Listen to this guy, he knows what he's doing.
The 5150 worked great in certain spots on the demo and it had the right sound for the job. hat being said, I <3 my Legacy!
