Hey, im thinking about buying a 5150 2 head with a marshall cab. Does anyone here know how well it can do eddie's old tone, and a good 80s hair metal lead tone? Ive never gotten to play one, cause the guitar shops i live next to dont carry peavey.

Re: Peavey 5150

I don't think it does Eddie's tone as well as you'd think, but I love the sound for metal. I'm more into melodic deathmetal, but it's a very good amp. one trick pony, but it's a killer trick.

If you do get one, get the original, and try for the blockhead. the II has less bass and gain, and more highs, I don't like it much at all. No balls!

Re: Peavey 5150

I would advise looking into a JCM800 ...
I had two 5150 II's blow their power transformers on me, and I will never purchase another Peavey product again.

Re: Peavey 5150

If you'd like to check out how the 5150 sounds (or a crap load of other amps) have a look at http://www.chrissnider.net/amp_clips/index.htm

I've got a 5150 head and cab. To my ears, those 5150 head clips come across as too 'trebly'. Those clips were done with JB and Wolfgang pups which are pretty hot and trebley pups in their own right. To me, those clips really show how Ed's hearing must be shot in the higher frequencies :laugh2:

Some of that 'trebly' tone is due to crossover distortion because it's biased too cold. Some people like that sound but if you'd like to hear the amp after it's been rebaised, check out http://members.aol.com/fjamods/5150Clips.html

Check out some of VHoholic's sound clips in the tips and clips section. Superb player and very authentic early VH tone with his low output PAF pups & 5150 combo. BTW, he's playing a 5150 combo which doesn't have the cold biase issues the head does.

The 'achilies heel' of the 5150 is the crappy clean tones, epeacially if your playing at performance levels.

Re: Peavey 5150

Out of the 3 versions of the 5150, I like the 5150 Combo the best and the 5150II head the least. I've owned a 5150 for almost 6 years now and haven't had a single problem out of it. And I 'work' that sucker too. It's a lot warmer sounding than the head versions, at least to my ears.

Re: Peavey 5150

I too, had a 5150 belch grey smoke out of it, never sounded the same after that, I traded it in for 100 watt Jubilee head...straight across..he he he

Re: Peavey 5150

wouldn't it be great if the 5150 jut came with a volume knob and ed's sound already in it...i'd buy one then...

Re: Peavey 5150

Thanks guys for the replys. Inter: i listened to all the sound clips you mentioned and i think they sound pretty good. Well if i do get 1 i'll probaly change the tubes and have it biased. But i also have like 5 other amp choices im thinking about.

Re: Peavey 5150

Note: Peavey dropped EVH.
The 5150 is having a name change.
The wolfgang is no longer in production.

Re: Peavey 5150

I know, ive heard alot about that. But i dont think it has happened yet. Do you know if it has been confirmed yet?

Re: Peavey 5150

well all the online music stores i frequent no longer have the wolfgang listed....
And the ones that do are diminishing in numbers, and only a few have some EXP models yet.

I am severely pissed off by this occurance.

Re: Peavey 5150

Why did Peavey/Van Halen part? And what the hell are they gunna call the 5150 now?

Re: Peavey 5150

im not sure why they parted, but i heard that his contract ended. i think he wants to leave so he can go with charvel
