Well...I found a 5150 Combo used at a decent price; plugged in a SD Equipped Gibson Les Paul and an 80's Jackson Soloist Custom and I fell in lust...couldn't pass it up. Put it on layaway today. :friday:

Re: Peavey 5150

I used to have one of those, but traded it in on my Triple Rec. I kinda regret it, but I do like the Rec, so I guess it's a wash. Someday I'll get another, probably a head this time around, though.

Oh yeah, you might want to put wheels on it, those combos are insanely heavy.

Post up some pics when you bring her home. :)

Re: Peavey 5150

Triple Recs are very nice. A different beast I'm sure.

The 5150 should be fun - First Generation Early-Mid Nineties Peavey 5150 2x12 Combo. I plugged it in and played it and clearly I was impressed. Very much reminded me of my ’78 Marshall JMP 2104 2x12 that I let go last year. Tried it against a few amps; Carvin Vai Legacy Combo 2x12 (Not even close…very disappointing actually), Soldano Combo 1x12 (Purple Tolex no less…it was nice but $1,999.99 and just not my thing) and a Mesa Boogie Mark III 1x12. The controls on the 5150 were pretty intuitive and didn’t take much for me to dial in a few tones that I LOVED…I think I’ve found my replacement for the old Marshall.

Re: Peavey 5150

Get On Up! Now that you mention it...when I was researching the '36 Coupe prior to buying it I ran across that. I had a Peavey Blues Classic 50W 1x15 that I loved as well. Thanks for the reminder/link.

Re: Peavey 5150

I've got the Kustom Hybrid, haven't had a chance to put it through much but it should be James Brown's answer to the Marshall Valvestate. (Since I like the Valvestate, and I like Peavey's Transtube amps, I should be able to get some great tones out of the Kustom HV)

Re: Peavey 5150

The godfather of soul designed the 5150? sorry, couldnt resist... Congrats on the 5150 Bro! I love that fat gooey tone they make. Id love to have one someday. I played one LONG ago and played a 5150III not so long ago. (love that one too) dunno if its just my memory, but I dont think the III was quite as thick sounding. ? can anyone confirm? (sorry Muttz, not trying to hijack your thread)

Enjoy that beast!!

Thanks! I've read a bunch of reviews and I guess the Peavey 5150 Heads sounded different than the Combo and each subsequent version of the 5150 was a bit different. Most of the reviews seem to say the original 5150 was the best tone-wise. Cant say as I've never plugged into the other versions or the EVH Versions either. I just know I Hella-Liked this one the moment I plugged into it and played it, and I've been looking for a while for another bigger amp...it really reminded me of the JMP with the simplicity of the controls and it's responsiveness to the dynamics of tweaking every know...esp like the Resonance and Presence Controls in that area and it freakin' sounded GREAT.

Re: Peavey 5150

yeah, they were each tweaked alil diff. Im not sure what the tonal difs were on the gain chan, but IIRC, didnt they improve the clean chans on the diff ones? I knwo the one I played was an orig 5150. be curious to know what tonal changes were over the diff models. Ill have to check out some comparo vids on utube.. (hard to tell thru comp tho) Also, arent the combos 60 watts??

Re: Peavey 5150

Welcome to the peavey brotherhood. The 5150 are balls deep good.

I love my bandit and jsx....

funny... PV seems to get such little respect but they make some great amps. durable too. I have a classic 30 and an ultra plus. The ultra doesnt have the soul of my splawn, but its a brutal workhorse

The 5150 is the best metal amp going imo They are serious weapons of mass distortion.

I have always wanted a combo 5150.

Re: Peavey 5150

I completely agree about Peavey making some killer amps; I LOVED the '94 Blues Classic 50W 1x15 I had and should have hung onto it and the '78Marshall JMP as well but life happens. Those were the only two tube amps I've owned; 15 years w/the Marshall and about 3 months w/the Blues Classic. I've had the Kustom '36 Coupe for about 3 months now and it's been fun, but after playing the 5150 and being blown away by it's simplicity and sond...I really cannot wait to get the 5150 home and plug it in!!!

Re: Peavey 5150

Woo Hoo!!! Warmoth Tele sold, payment received and the 5150 will becoming home as soon as I get back into Denver Tuesday afternoon!!!

Re: Peavey 5150

I know I'm gonna love it. Going to dig out my pedals too; Keeley Twilight Zone & Baked SD-1, Ibz TS9 Tube Screamer & Metal Screamer, Tech21 SansAMP GT & Double Drive...it's gonna be a fun evening. ;)
