Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

Meridian to be specific - my 1992 5150 and 1993 Blues Classic Combos!!! I've had the 5150 for almost 5 years now I would guestimate and it has been flawless in performance. Simple and pleasing in every way I need it to be with out a tube or speaker change...bone stock. I had traded a 2010 MIM FSR Metallic Mystic Pearl Burst Maple Board Strat for another 5150 Combo a couple of weeks ago but it did not compare to this one so it did not remain with me.

This is the 4th Blues Classic I've bought. First one was great amp and I had it when I had a '78 Marshall JMP 2104 2x12 and should have retained both of 'em. Last two Blues Classics just didn't live up to my memory/impression of that first one so they went on their way. Ran across the one in the pics below on my local CL when the prior owner made an offer to trade straight across for the Strat I relisted post reversal of the 5150 trade. Thankfully this BC sounds and performs like the first one I had to include the Lead Channel gain structure and flexibility with the adjustment of the Pre/Post Gain and the depth of the Reverb - the two things that were lacking on the last two.

Heck yeah!

I've got a modded Windsor and a stock VTM 60...both are all kinds of killer!

PV is made in China now. Has been for a while.

Perhaps you didn't see that episode on "Undercover Boss" ?

I will never own PV or Carvin stuff ever again, can't give that stuff away.

Well that’s not very appreciative! ;)

I remember the Windsor although I’ve never run across one. Will have to research the VTM 60. Thanks for sharing.

The VTM 60 is a sonic dead ringer for a late 70’s JMP 2204, even though it runs on 6L6 power tubes. The Windsor heads can be awesome, too...mine sure is.

Re: Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

VTM sounds way cool! I had a ‘78 2104 combofor about 10 years. Will have m to try a VTM if I ever run across one. .

Re: Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

I own a Classic VTX Hybrid amp. I think all those old Peaveys are hybrids with the Tube amp/ SS preamp. Cool for gettin' yer Skynard on.I think saying a VTM 60 is identical to a late 70's MarshaLL may be just a tad optimistic though, to put it mildly.

I used to be able to scoop up those massive power Peavey heads for nearly nothing, but not no more, they have all but dried up, and they are getting costly, and I sure wish I would have kept my old Mace, I think it was.

Anyway, those cabinets on the Blues Classic are really nice.

Heres a youtube clip from someone of the VTX I still have. Not a very refined tone, but still kicks arse. Those old Peavey onboard choruses are excellent. The Scorpion speakers are a excellent speaker, kind of a poor mans EV.

The VTM 60 is not a hybrid amp. It’s got a 100% pure tube signal path.

I had a 1979 JMP 2204 head for a little over a year (lost it due to theft). My amp guy told me to replace it with a VTM 60 (I couldn’t afford to drop another $1200 to replace the JMP). I got one used at Guitar Center for less than $200 (this was 10 years ago...they’re at least twice that now). I got it retubed and dialed it in and holy crap...I couldn’t hear a difference between them. It was amazing.

I got rid of my gear a few years later after my wife and I started our family. The kids got a few years older and I started replacing it. This VTM 60 I have now was acquired in a trade for a guitar I wasn’t using anymore. This one is just as good as the last one I had.

Don't own Peavey amps..........but I do own 3 Peavey Rockmaster preamps (one needs repair) three 12 inch Peavey Scorpion speakers, one 12 inch Peavey Black Widow speaker and a Peavey Futura 12 inch rack-mounted speaker cab. I love them all.

I love my Peavey Delta Blues 115. It was made in China. Peavey was one of the last 'production amp' manufactures to move their production from the US and for that, they have taken more heat than others that have been doing it for some time now. Idealistically, I'd prefer if they (and all others) were made in the USA, but to do so would have caused significant price increases and they would have priced themselves above their competition. It's just the way things go in a global market. Do you buy all American made clothing? Doubt it....that's tough to do.

Re: Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

The VTMs are all tube, those old VTX combos were the opposite of most hybrids, SS preamp and 6L6 power amp.

Nice and thanks for the clip. Yeah; I've heard a lot of people describe the old Peavey amps as "workhorses" and sure seen a truckload of them in bars/on stage over the years. Even the old Nashville Series 400/1000 and some of their Chorus models pop up locally from time to time and have some really interesting eq capabilities as well as features (chorus, reverb, tremolo, phase). Always seem to hold up well and keep on working after all the years and usage.

Re: Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

Was prowling CL out of state as I'm taking a trip over the next couple of day and found a VTM 120 Head for sale at $525 - described as "if you're not familiar with this amp it was modeled after a Jose (Arredondo) Modded JCM 800 and it nails it".

Re: Peavey Amp Appreciation Thread - My Heads in Mississippi

I've owned a few XXX's, a Penta and a Windsor. I also have an old 412MS cab that I love. All good stuff

I saw the "Undercover Boss" episode. It was pretty awful. Peavey should have never agreed to do that. Despite that, I haven't given up on Peavey as a brand. Of course I'm biased. I grew up and live in Mississippi. I think it's important for a "Southern" sound to take its place next to the "British" and "California" sound. It helps that I like their gear. There are even some guys in Guildford, Surrey UK that seem to be fans:

Andertons Music Co. has a bunch of Peavey gear in their YouTube channel.

I've owned this 2004 model since 2005. LOVE the Ultra series, had a 6505...but the JSX is King IMHO!
