Just curious on your thoughts on this one guys. Its an amp ive been considering to get for a while

I need to know what its limitations or drawbacks are, whats good about it etc. Also what genres of music it would generally be used for as well you kno the usually questions

I know the overdrive is going to be limited but how limited i need to kno.

What do u think of the amp?

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

I've used Classic 30s and 50s and now have a Delta Blues - They're pretty good jack-of-all trades amps. The clean is warm and loud. The overdrive isn't bad, but isn't eq'd that well with the clean side - it gets brighter when you switch to the OD. You're not gonna get metally gain though. I use pedals with mine. You won't get true Marshall or Fender colors, but you can get a big, warm pro sound.

Unless you need very loud cleans, or play with John Bonham, even the 30s should pack plenty of volume. The 50s are a little more versatile.

Anyway, I wish I could afford a Dr. Z or something, but a classic gets me most of the way there.

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

For what you're doing, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a more suitable amp at its price point.

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

Well I think my price limit is gonna be $1000... I dont want to spend that much or more but anything TUBE and under that price is fine. I have a job and can make payments n such without problem but Im not a wasteful spender--i want to keep it a sane, under $1000 price tag.

Peavey, Engl, Rivera, Carvin are all amps id consider

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

The only one of those I'd go for over a Peavey classic is a Rivera - but the Peavey is several hundred cheaper.

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

A Rivera Knucklehead 55 combo will sound better, of course, but it's definitely not in your budget, of < $1k ...

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

yes. I own a peavey classic 50 and agree that it is an amazing amp. However, to fix the eq issues, I modded mine and replaced the speakers. The mods were based on some from www.blueguitar.org with some variations for personal prefence. For what you need, peavey classics are the right amps at the right price. However, as soon as I can afford it, Im getting a knucklehead. They are the best amp I have ever played and I have played a lot. They may not have the very best OD or very best cleans, but they are damn close and can do everything. The major problem however, is price.

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

I say go for it. If you buy used, you can always move it on if a retube from www.eurotubes.com doesn't give you the tone you want.

I used to own the 4x10 version.

I remember guitar player magazine had a review on the best equipment combination to cop SRV's tone. They listed the classic 4x10 with a tubescreamer as right up there.

I'm not a big fan of the classic 30, unless of course you grab an extension cab with it or you pretty much always play through a PA.

If the od channel is your priority, try and grab the 2x12 version. Having said that, the 4x10 will also give u a very rich, usable od tone, especially at performance volume.

Basically, the classic series are better that anything else in it's class.

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

hmmm sounds good!

thanks guys

I only considered the 50 watt 2X12 or 4X10 versions anyways, cuz I noticed that amps sound punchier and overal fuller with more speakers blasting sound. Anyways, I think I might go ahead and go with the Classic unless i find it inappropiate for my tastes or doesnt "feel" right playing thru it... Oh well

Definetly will get a pedal or two to enhance my OD and Tubescreamer 808 or the Maxon 808 are top on my list!

Re: Peavey Classic 30/50

one of the major beefs i had with the amp was the EL84 power tubes... Are they replaceable? Or am i stuck with the EL84? Cuz i heard the Marshall DSL401 had EL84s and they couldn't be replaced with say a EL34s or such... Dunno I heard EL84 weren't that goood not sure

Dunno about them being swappable, because the size of the EL84 is totally different from most other power tubes.

It's not true that they don't sound good. I have EL84-based mono block power amps that sound great.
