Peavey Classic 30 question

I'm thinking of buying one of these. It's the version between the original one and the newest one. I've read a lot of threads about how the Classics run hot to the point that you can't touch the control plate and I'm wondering if that is the case with all of them or if Peavey solved that issue at some point in time. Anyone out there have a Classic 30 that doesn't run hot?

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

While I have never owned one myself, I have seen them on enough stages to realize that someone is indeed buying them, and they seem to be pretty reliable. I like every one I've tried, too.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

My buddy has one
Loves it

Has not mentioned once about the control panel being hot

It's one of the newer tweed versions with a stand by switch
Which he values

Edit
He has swapped the Blue Marvell speaker
With a Cannabis Rex

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

I have one of the early ones and it did indeed get pretty hot. I installed a switchable fan on the chassis that I frankly run all the time and it is super reliable. ( It was before, it just runs cooler now).

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

A lot of EL84 amps run hot...my Mesa Maverick and DC-3 do. My DC-3 is a contemporary of the Classic 30. It is better made, has more features, is quieter, has two channels with full eq, a superior speaker and better tone...BUT... it was twice the cost of the Classic 30. I got a really good deal on mine used, and never regretted spending the extra money.

That said, the Classic 30 has graced a lot of stages over the year. Like all Peavey products, it offers tremendous value. Get some good tubes in it and it will last a long time. If it fits your needs...go for it.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

Switch it off between sets.
I find that a lot of amps get hotter (and dirtier) over the course of the night, so giving the tubes a chance to cool a little can retain definition.
Especially in cathode biased amps (im only guessing the classic 30 is too though).

Re: Peavey Classic 30 question

I have one and have not noticed it running any hotter than any other tube amp.. control panel gets warm, but no where near the heat of the tubes. I replaced the stock speaker for Emi Private Jack and am quite happy with it.
BTW, mine is prolly from the early 2000s
