What would you choose if they were the same price?
I'm fond of the Peavey, but I've heard good things about the Laney... This is a private sale so I haven't arranged for a chance to try the laney yet.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

What sound are you looking for? The LC has a much better distortion channel

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

I'm after something with a good clean channel that generally works well with pedals. I'm not after a good gain channel, since I rely on my pedal board.

I'm after a fenderish/voxish clean... and the reason I'm looking at these is that I need something small and portable... I'm sick of lugging around my other bigger amps.

I've heard of reliability issues of the Classic 30. Has anyone had any problems with them?

Hey YJM,
What kind of music do you play? And what drive pedals do you use with it?

Are you using the stock speaker?

Thanks!

I play metal and rock mainly. Recently joined a band that's playing metal/hardcore music.

I'm not using any drive pedals with it. It's enough gain when post volume is cranked half way or more. I do run my POD XT into the power amp for low volume playing though. I don't know how to describe the gain channel. It's not quite American or British sounding. Somewhere in between maybe? It's got a good crunchy roar to it though.

I am using the stock speaker, but... I just bought a Behringer 4x12 cab, which was the only thing I could find in 16ohms. It sounds great through the cabinet and it really lets it open up. I needed the cab for some extra volume and low end for practice and live, but the amp will keep up with a loud metal drummer on its own.

The cleans are very good with this amp. I don't do pedals so I'm not sure what a distortion pedal sounds like through the clean channel. The cleans sound great though with a little reverb and the EQ is pretty versatile. The only problem for me is the headroom. The cleans will break up when you turn this amp up. Can sound very good, but is often undesirable for me.

Feel free to ask me any questions you'd like,
YJMR

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

Thanks for help guys.
I tried a new LC30, and drove to the 2nd hand shop selling the Classic 30. The Classic 30 just sounded more lively and raunchy. So I've put down a deposit for the peavey, and picking it up on thursday!

Cheers!

Hey that's great Spuds. I am glad you played them and found the one you like the best.

It is a good day when you get the sound you want. ;)

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

Yeah... and I'm really happy I found a small amp that can give me a sound I'm happy with. I was getting really sick of carrying around a head and 2x12 cab.

I've got a G12M and G12H from the 70's, and I'll stick one of them in. Should sound sweet!!

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

Actually, do you think the G12M or G12H would be a better match?
I play rock and blues...

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

Ohhh thats cool, I'd love to put a new speaker in mine. I'm running mine through a 412 cab though.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

I've swapped out the speaker for a Greenback and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Its like a whole different amp, in a good way. I loved it before, but found that it was too mid heavy and honky. With the new speaker it retains its character but is much more usable. It also reacts with my pedals a lot better...

But on the side... it was a bit*h swapping out the speaker. Someone please tell me i'm wrong... but I had to take the whole amp apart to get the speaker out! Its open back but I don't think you can actually remove that little bit on the back. So I had to remove the actual amp unit... also had to take out the reverb tank coz it was connected to the "head" by a really short lead.

Well it was worth it but I don't wanna do it again...

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

I love the clean channel on the classic series. Turn it up and you get a great smooth driven tone that doesn't get harsh.

Lead channel is a bit odd sounding though.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 vs Laney LC30

Hey spuds, you're right on bro and you made one hell of a choice. Good call with the greenback two. You're right, you do have to take out the chassis to get the speaker in there. I think the Greenback is the best choice for that amp. I've tried a Jensen c12n, a Celestion g12h and the Greenback and the greenback is definetly the best speaker on it's own for it. Although, if you really want to go that much further with it, consider getting a 1x12 extension cab with the g12h. It's a perfect compliment. It's sort of a scooped speaker with lots of bottom end and smooth highs. The greenback is a great all around speaker, but it lacks a bit of bass IMO.

Another thing you should consider is swapping those tubes! Those stock Sovtek tubes are really harsh and hold that amp back from it's full potential. You can get a full set of tubes for it here for a pretty good price: https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=view_products&category_id=8&sub_category_id=33

Congrats and enjoy your new gear!
