Peavey classic 50 212 - speaker choice?

Does anyony have this amp, or know about it? I'm looking for speakers to use for Dirty blues to hard rock tones? I have Warehouse guitar Speakers in it now, V30 and a GB, and I like them ok, but I wonder if I could do better. I have 0 experience with any other speakers. I don't have alot to spend on them, so I'm interested in Eminence (or something in that range) but there are so many choices to choose from I don't know what will do what for me. It may also be only one of my speakers that needs to change. (I beleive it's the V30 that I'm not liking but i haven't isolated it yet)

I have searched alot of info on speakers and there's tons of it, but I'm kind of looking for info specific to my amp, but it doesn't have to be if you want to chime in. :thanks:

I know that at least one person here really dug the Eminence Red Coat Pvt Jacks in his Peavey Classic 30. I've used that spkr myself, and I really like them, but I have not tried them w/the Classic.

My guess would be that they would sound good for the styles you describe. They are a Greenback clone sort of spkr.

There have been some threads on this subject, but I can never find them w/the search function.

I remember the stock speakers in the classic 50 being really crappy... lots of 'barfy' midrange and just about anything was an improvement. Even celestion 75's which I don't like very much. After that its a matter of taste... do you want a more marshall/British thing or a more fender/American vibe?

Yeah, the stock speakers were pretty much like you discribed,... pretty bad. I replaced them with the WGS speakers because they were cheap enough, and I'd read good things about them, but I had no idea what to expect from them. I went with the ones that got the most praise. They were a huge improvement and are by no means bad speakers, I just think I could probably do better for my tastes.

I see the term "woolly" sometimes referring to fender tone. I don't really know what it means exactly but, it sounds like something I'd like. I've always preferred Marshal dirt tones.

Well, I went all out swapping speakers around yesterday to try and isolate the problem, and it turns out, the problem was with GB. As soon as I pulled it the problem was gone. That surprised me. I never even questioned that speaker. It also turns out that with the right tubes, the stock speakers aren't that bad at all.

I ended up with a stock Blue Marval paired with the V30 and I couldn't put it down last night. Much better.

Now I will be looking for an ext. cab to run with my combo, and I will likely get another V30 to use with my other stock Blue Marvel

Thanks to every one that responded

Then you just gotta try some different things like you did until you hit a combo that delivers the tone you desire.

Celestion's are going to be more "British" while Jensen/Weber is going to be of a Fender voice...

And then there's EV/JBL... the high wattage speakers which are a whole other trip.

Re: Peavey classic 50 212 - speaker choice?

I just read my last post and I guess it didn't make much sense. I asked this question on in the peavey forum also, but over there I elaborated more. Here I wanted to get your take on what speakers you'd recommend to see what I come up with from both places. so,...over there I said that one of the speakers was a little boomy when I dialed in enough bass to sound thick enough. I suspected it was the V30 that was the culprit and the conversation turned to addressing that "problem", and that led to using an extention cab with my combo so I can run the amp at 8ohms and use all my speakers I currently have. I got confussed this morning and should have reread this tread to see where I was. :alcoholic
....Now if you go read post#6 again it should make more sense. I'd still like suggestions for speakers as I found out I don't like the GB. It could be that I have a bad speaker because a guy over there (at peavey) has the same amp with WGS Greenbacks and he says his could use more bass.

....sorry about that, these forums are still very new to me.
