Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Seems like a great idea-I'm keeping an eye on it too.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

I really like the look of it. The design seems great. Peavey usually uses nice big transformers, and if they kept that circuit simple enough, with only that rotary knob, I'm sure it'll sound great. Too bad there's not a footswitch to go between all the settings, but it would be hard on the tubes to do that, since you're changing the way the tube operates, rather than simply changing channels. I'm pretty much finished with my amp searching, but I could see this amp as being a huge success.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Very cool idea. not too bad looking for a Peavey amp, too.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Peavey products have either totally underwhelmed me or totally disappointed me in the past (I went thru two 5150 heads with bad transformers) ... I have no faith left in that company.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

I'm hesitant to label anything with the Peavey logo on it as "The Holy Grail" but I do really like the design of this. Simple, flexible, and supposedly sounds great. And the mudflap girl means XXX-hi-gain. What's not to like! ;)

I don't buy that for a minute! :laugh2:

There's ALWAYS one more...

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Hmm the looks don't do much for me, but that might just be the animated picture. I've never really trusted Peavey amps since they always seem to have that cheap part (transformers) and they're usually one trick ponies but really good at one thing or really bad at it. 140W is scary, who'd ever need that much? I hope it isn't superloud like the 5150 and still sounds good in the studio or bedroom. I'd love to test it if George Lynch had anything to do with it, but wasn't his model supposed to have KT88 powertubes? If it's a hot rodded plexi kinda sound gainwise I'm game, and if it's as high quality as they say it is it might end up next to my Powerball!

thats cool cause it's an animated picture
just look at it up close..:D

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

looks very nice, i have enough amps myself but its very interesting indeed, though i dont think it has an effects loop, plug n play is all nice n good but i know how bored i get at my 5150 when i cant have a little reverb or delay. i dont know if it has an effects loop but in my opinion an amp isnt much worth buying without one.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

peavey needs to make an amp thats not 10000 watts. all the peavey heads ive heard of recently have all been 120+ watts. that sweet retro look in a 30-50 watter with the 5 different voicing? count me in then.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

that would be a cool amp if it had reverb, good effect loop, and a 1/2 power switch or 100/50/25 switch, or maybe a class a/ab switch

ARE YOU LISTENING PEAVEY???????????????

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

I'm really curious about the Valve King 1x12 combo that's soon to be out. I know that some people (and maybe for good reason) dislike Peavey but my C30 has been going strong for 2 years now with no problems. I do agree that more amp companies need to come down to earth a bit. There's a lot more of "us" who use low watted amps compared to "them" who need 100+ watts.

I don't understand why anybody would need a 100-watter nowadays. At gigs, the amp is (almost) always miked thru the PA.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

In some regards it sounds like that Lee Jackson Ampeg with the locking key. I am curious for sure, but at its price point it is going to have to sound a lot better than much of their current line. PV has good but not great tones. I have owned a bunch over the years and have always been left wanting a bit more.

Re: Peavey Penta-Could This be the Holy Grail?

Well James Peters of Peters Amps did the switchable voicing on a prior series of his amps. Also, Reverend uses a voicing switch, 3 voices, and I know of a few that have been modified to be activated by a footswitch. So the idea has been used before. I wish the 120 watt peaveys had a triode switch and a 1/2 power switch too!!!
