Peavey Ultra 112 first impressions

ok well it got here wednesday so I have had it for 5 days, long enough for some tweaking and poking/prodding
Its a 90s made 1x12 3 channel 60 watt tube combo, preamp:4- 12AX7 and 2- 6L6 poweramp tubes
Ebay scrore $212 shipped came with footswitch and manual

Unpacked it and set it up plugged in everything works fine no static no buzzes no hissing set clean channel to taste and tried to get a good sound out of the Ultra channel ... kinda disapointing is this a tube amp?

Im glad I didnt pay much for it, clean is ok, but does break up if string attack is heavy, Im reminded imediately of why I have steered clear of PV amps since the early 90s, the distortion pretty much sounds like every high gain PV evermade ,undefined ,muffeled and buzzy.

I decide to try it as a head unit with my 2x12 emenence ledgendM(modeling) loaded bass cab with the combos speaker disconnected.... BIG improvement right away!

I really HATE this cliche',but it really did sound like a blanket was lifted off the amp, and besides that this oversized 2x12 really punches and kicks. I cant believe Peavey would sabbotage their own amps like this, the Sheffield speaker is a P.O.S.

Still Im tryin to make this amp sound good enough to be a keeper...I got to tell you, my Line 6 spider II head sounded remarkably good with this cab, better than the Ultra 112 sounded on its own.

Today I had some time on my hands and decided to change out some preamp tubes, the ones in it were unlabeled except for 2 that had 12ax7 stamped in red and a made in china sticker stuck on the glass, Luckily I have some preamp tubes on hand, I put Tung-Sols in V1 and V4 and JJ high gain rated Ecc83s tubes in V2 and V3 they control the gain in the crunch and Ultra channel .

I was very impressed ,I forgot to mention that I tried running a EQ in the loop and was very successful at getting rid of that nasty gritty PV buzz by cutting the 1.6k freq. abit and slightly boosting the lowend,

the amp was starting to sound pretty good, infact when I plugged back in after swapping the tubes it almost ratteled my teeth out with the EQ settings I had made for the old tubes....

the amp really opened up and there really is no mush or mud to be found now, tweaked the EQs some more and tried some pedals,,,the amp takes pedals well, but Im trying to be a minamalist here I want to use the amps distortion,

I broke out my old rocktron nitro booster and that completed it.
Just a slight bit of boost and compression from that pedal + a cheap Dan-o EQ pedal in the loop the ultra channel is crunching like no bodys business with the gain at 7 ...Im pretty happy with it, I can get into this tone.

Now I just need a pair of JJ 6L6GC;s or TAD6L6GC STR ;s or??? any suggestions? Next project is to convert this combo into a head unit what do ya think?

It's bit of a hard read without line spaces KD.

I agree with you though, Peavey's downfall is usually speakers, in the combo's and cabs. But, Peavey isn't the only company with that problem.

The TAD's will be more open and the JJ's will be thicker, a little more syrup.

To tell you the truth, I'd start with the speaker if it were me.

Good luck with the process. Ain't it grand? I lub' tunin'. :)

Very cool man, it pays to tweak.

A pair of JJ 6L6GCs would put that thing over the top. I had them in my 5150 and I have them now in my ENGL. They're a fat, clear sounding tube with a big low end and creamy response for lead. I noticed a huge improvement when I replaced the stock 5881s in my ENGL with them, even more so than when I changed the preamp tubes. Very organic and warm I would say.

Re: Peavey Ultra 112 first impressions

thanks for the replies, I will go with JJs ,Im still tweaking away at the settings, finding my tone is not easy with this amp, but Im getting there.

Generally I want my main distorted tone , and a nice clean.. add alittle chorus and delay and Im happy.

No way I will be happy with a 1x12 combo , it sounds too good thru that oversized closedback 2x12 , I will sell the Ledgend modeling speakers and probably put other Emmis in it.

sorry about the excrutiatingly long post B4, it was the weekend I was bored :P
I added spaces
its still too long to read about a PV amp I guess lol

If I ever get my Mesa, I will write a novel and send you guys hardback copies
Peace!

Re: Peavey Ultra 112 first impressions

sure,post it up!

I have totally retubed my Ultra now, JJ 6L6GC power tubes and JJ High Gain rated ECC83S' in all 4 V stages now, most guys try to tame this amp, I feed it all the gain it can take ...and it loves it!

I was swapping the JJ's and Tungsols in different positions, but ended up using all 4 JJs . In V1 the JJ opened up alot more than the Tungsol, and just sounded clearer and more defined.Everything I have read says this should be the other way around, but its not.

I wonder if most people put lower gain tubes in V1 more out of theroy or actually using their ears.
Anyway, its a high gain amp I play high gain music and it just works for me. And Im loving it, for what I paid its unbeatable.

Peace!
