Peavey XXX Head or 40W Combo?

The only unmiced gigging I'd be doing is a small place, maybe 250 ppl max, and I have that 2x12 cab as well. The head I'm pretty sure would blow my cab after a while...so I'm sortof afraid of that. The combo would be about 100-150 cheaper, but the crunch/clean channel shares an EQ, and it doesn't have the master volume. It has all those built in FX as well, so I wouldn't have to gig with my V-amp2. What would you guys do?

i'd go with the xxx, but dont crank it, then, later, replace the speakers with v30's or something to get the right wattage so they dont explode

Oh snap...forgot to add some stuff. It's both the XXX, no worries there, but ones a 120W head, and ones a 40W 1x12 combo. I'm afraid with the head I'll be too busy paying out my ass till christmas to replace the speakers.

I always try to buy as high as I can afford to at the time.

The only reason I do this is because sometimes I haven't done it, then later on I've thought 'why didn't I just spend that little bit more'

Get the gear you're going to love longer, rather than worrying too much about the money. Spending the extra might hurt temporarily, but after you've done the money thing you don't care so much, and you're happy you bought as good as you could get.

Yeah, the shared EQ won't be a problem for gigging at all.

I'd love to buy the head and cab, but it's just way too much at the time, and I'm thinking I'll never really use 120W of tube power, 40 tube should be plenty, right?

I'm just going to trust my ears, and try to haggle the price as low as I can get it.

Sounds like a good option. In the same breath as what I said before you don't wanna go into huge debt to buy something you can't afford.

I personally have never had a halfstack, only combos. Haven't needed anything bigger so far.

There is a 2x12, but the shop doesn't have one, and if they ordered it, I couldn't get it for as low as I'd want.

mine is the 2x12 120w, i love it. i probably woulda gotten a head and cab if i could afford it and fit it in my room, but im really happy with what i got now

I *think* I found a guy with the head for 600 on HC, so we'll see how that goes...
