Peavey XXX tube question

I'm pretty much completely clueless when it comes to types of tubes, replacing them, etc., so this may or may not be a dumb question. I've had my Peavey XXX 112 60w combo for about two years and I've never replaced the tubes, (I get the feeling this is a bad thing, yes?) and though I haven't noticed much change in the sound, I've lately wanted to improve the tone of the amp a little bit. I'm looking for perhaps a more British sound, and also for a way to get the overdriven tone from it without using unplayable volumes. (which I may need an attenuator for, but I am equally clueless there) Do any of ya'll have any recommendations, or any links to resources which might tell me exactly what different tubes (ie El-84s, 6L6's, etc.) do? Thanks for your help.

Re: Peavey XXX tube question

Okay, well if you've had it two years it may be time for a retube. BUT, it depends on how often you play it, how long you play it, and how loud you play it. Also, if you want a more British sound, switch to the EL-84 power tube.

Re: Peavey XXX tube question

i put EL-34s in my XXX and definately prefer it that way. that and the cool thing about XXX's is that you just hit a switch in it and itll go from taking 6L6s to EL34s- no need to take it in to the store for a rebias or anything. flip the switch, put in the new tubes, and you should be set. you can only change to EL34s though

Re: Peavey XXX tube question

I preferred EH12AX7's (stock in the head) in the preamp, and JJ EL34's in the power section in my XXX.
