Peavey's EL84 based Classic 50/50. Any opinions?

Hello all.

Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with the Peavey Classic 50/50?

Being EL84 based, how would it compare to a 6L6 based unit of similar power (like Mesa's 50:50)?

Thanks in advance.

They are hard to get on ebay. I lost a bid for one the other day. They appear rugged, relaible and to be highly regarded. Frm the H. Central reviews, they sound great, but probably not as nice as your Mesa-then again, not nearly as expensive.I wouldnt run a 1st rate premp thru the Peave Classic 50/50. More something like a Rockmaster.

A long time ago I had the Peavey 60/60 power amp w/6L6's and it was a very good power amp for the money. I think that's the one you should get.

One thing I've noticed with EL-84 Peavey amps is that they sound beautiful at low to medium volume. As soon as you turn them up to rehearsal room levels, the tone falls apart and loses definition. The 6L6's won't do that. They break up in a more pleasing way. I'm not talking in general....I'm just referring to what I've experienced with Peavey.

I've been running a 50:50 for right under 2 years now with my GT-8 and I love it to bits, but it is a bit too much for some situations. The thing with the Mesa is that it sounds spectacular at around 6 or 7, but at that point, I'm changing weather patterns. :)

I was thinking about getting a 20:20 for smaller gigs, but a Classic 50/50 popped up locally for $200 and I was thinking of giving it a whirl.

It might suit you fine then. One thing about Peavey is that they can almost hang with Mesa, tonewise. When I had the 60/60 power amp with a JMP-1 preamp years ago, I upgraded to a Mesa 295, and in all honesty, it wasn't a night and day difference. The price was though.

Thanks for the info.

I do believe I'll be taking the plunge tomorrow.

Now, to figure out who makes a good EL84. :burnout:

I have that model exactly - the old style with the blue/white writing. I run a GT-6 through it and it does a beautiful job for what I need. It isn't the loudest thing in the world for sure, but a) I need to invest in some new EL84's and b) that's what you're looking for. I've carted it around quite a bit and it's held up just fine. The tone knobs on the front can really help tailor the sound to your cab/preamp/application. Let me know if you want any more specific info.

Gentlemen, I greatly appreciate your help. :)

dd12939, what tubes do you think you'll go with? I'm kind of new to the whole EL84 thing. Also, what cabs/speakers are you using with yours? Right now I'm using a Marshall C212 and an old Vox Buckingham cab, both loaded with one V30 and one G12H30.

i'd love to pickup an older peavey 50/50 power amp for my Roland GP8 rack FX unit... that and a couple of speaker cabs.. hmmm... a boss pedal lovers rig

Re: Peavey's EL84 based Classic 50/50. Any opinions?

Every person I've asked has said JJ's for power and preamp tubes, so I'll probably just order a whole set (8x EL84; 2x 12AT7; 2x 12AX7) from Eurotubes or Revolution Guitar (ask gearjoneser about the latter if you want a good recommendation).
My main cab right now is a Bag End S12RD 1x12. I also converted a Fender SS combo for cab duties. They get the job done for the time being. Eventually I'd like to pick up a pair of 2x12's. Maybe those old Mesa vertical ones like Kac has....
