Pedal choosing fun

Due to a situation at work a little while ago, the company I work for have given me £150 as a goodwill gesture and I'm thinking of buying a pedal with it.

I'm not entirely sure what I want yet as my current pedalboard covers all of my bases, so I'm thinking of getting something out of the ordinary.

I thought it might be fun to throw a question out to the forum...

If you had £150/€200/$230 to spend, what pedal would be a MUST have, and what pedal would you get to try something different?

Metal Muff W/Top Boost is a must have for me :D Another one I'd love to try someday is the Suhr riot

Re: Pedal choosing fun

Closest to a must have . . . I really enjoy clean or slightly dirty playing with a univibe type pedal. It just sounds pretty, less obnoxious than chorus or flanging, less obvious than your typical phaser. This effect has been consistently kicked on since I got it.

Envelope filters/auto wah type pedals can give a cool lead sound from time to time (but you wouldn't want to use them all the time though). They can give a vocal kinda sound that's quite different from using a wah pedal, and actually force you to pick slightly differently to control the effect.

MUST - Univibe
UNUSUAL - BOSS Slicer

Re: Pedal choosing fun

Must would be an analog delay, AD-900/AD-999, DM-2/DM-3, DMM, etc. (but don't you have a Carbon Copy already?)

For fun:
Used Strymon El Capistan. Nice sounding tape delay emulation and a really fun (and unique) looper.

Or a Russian Muff based pedal like the Pharaoh or Musket.

Or a MicroPog.

:)

At the moment, I still 'need' a

Phaser: Maxon Rotary Phase, MXR Phase 90 CSP version or DOD reissue
Fuzz: Dunlop JH Fuzz Face, Wren & Cuff Caprid, Throbak Stonebender... new Blackout Effectors Fuzz Bear looks good too
Wah: Dunlop Cry Baby Classic or Vox

Fun pedal I've been looking at is the Subdecay Vitruvian Mod.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

If we're talking about 'must-have' pedals that I have right now, if you held a gun to my head I would say maybe my ep clone (not working right now and just the boost but that was a good sounding pedal for just about everything.), but if I were getting something brand new I'd consider an overdrive, something DIY though... Probably the closest to what I like would be the analogman prince of tone.

For something different, I'd really like to try a digitech whammy or a phaser maybe...

Re: Pedal choosing fun

For something "out there", I might go with the EHX B9 or C9 organ pedals, or their equally wild "Ravish" sitar pedal. Might depend on the band I'm in and the type of material we would be doing. Or a good rotary speaker simulation.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

With that kind of coin for a pedal, I'd find a used Bogner Blue. My Randall RM50 already has an XTC Red module as its OD channel, and a Blackface module for the clean channel. That'd be a pretty cool setup.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

I'm with BoogieBill on the EH B9 or C9.

If you're just looking for something cool for $200+, seek out a Fender Vaporizer amp while you can still find them. It's sort of like a good sounding AC-15 w/reverb, in a Jetsons type enclosure. I dig my blue one. They're worth $400, but you can find deals on them if you look around.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

I would go for something a bit out there like one of the organ/ synth pedals or a top drawer treble booster. A treble booster in front of that JTM may just knock your socks off.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

Maybe show us a pic of your pedalboard/talk about your current board? Also, for pricing, a lot of the dudes here are trying to convert pounds to dollars, but pedals are about twice as expensive here. A strymon pedal of any kind is almost 300 pounds, or about $500. It's kind of BS.

I'd suggest taking a trip to London, Wunjo guitars there has a huge rack or insane fuzz pedals. It's hard to go wrong with crazy out of control fuzz in terms of guitar toys.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

I'm definitely with Bill and Joe. The EHX C9 is the coolest pedal I've purchased in a long time. The organ sounds are incredibly realistic.

Re: Pedal choosing fun

I'm about to rearrange my pedalboard with a couple of Duncan additions. Currently I've got a Dunlop Hendrix wah->Korg Pitchblack->Duncan Doubleback Compressor->Marshall Regenerator (Set to Univibe)->BMF Aries Fuzz->Duncan 805 Overdrive->Carl Martin Plexitone prototype->MXR Flanger->Duncan Deja Vu delay->TC Electronics Ditto in to the front of my Marshall JTM45 reissue.

I'll be adding another 805 overdrive and a Pickup Booster and for the time being taking off the Doubleback as it's just not getting the use. One 805 will be sat dirty and the other set as a slightly dirty boost. Pickup Booster will be used to give a little extra punch for my G&L Legacy, and occasionally use the Resonance switch to give a 'bucker in the bridge sound. I figure that'll give me a good range of tones from clean to dirty for both my McCarty and my Legacy.

I've thought about a Univibe in place of the Regenerator or maybe the EHX Pog Mini for some octave leads and pseudo-organ tones.

I'd actually quite like to get a EHX Epitome for the Pog Mini and the Flanger and put it in place of the MXR Flanger but it's beyond my price range...
