Pedal Mods?

maybe this is a stupid question to some of you, but i don't get these pedal mods. are they really worth it? i see a lot of ds-1 mods, but i think the dam pedal sounds good by itself. there are a lot of famous players who have used this without modification. why modify these pedals? what do modifications do that make them so popular?

Re: Pedal Mods?

You would be surprised how many metal albums from 80s eary 90 were recorded with Keeley pedal mods and Lee Jackson Marshall mods. Just theoretically, if the objective to get "your own stand out sound" wouldnt an assortment of mass produced products make it a bit difficult?

Re: Pedal Mods?

Great example for a killer mod: A stock SD-1 sounds like crap when used as a boost for my Engl Sovereign's channel 4. Only thing it does is adding more fizz a honky mid-hump.
Now i have a modded SD-1, it clearer, bigger and tighter bass, more power, no mid-hump and all in all a kickass booster pedal.

Re: Pedal Mods?

Same reason why some people switch pickups in a guitar. Theres plenty of folks who think stock pickups sound just fine, lets say the Gibson 498. Others of course think its crap and yank it out a day after getting the guitar for something after market.

Same reason why some people were happy with stock JCM800 and others had to have an extra gain stage added.

Same reason why __________________ (fill in the blank as I'm sure you get the idea)

Bottom line is that its to each his own. Theres nothing wrong with liking the stock pedal, stock pickups, stock whatever, more power to you, but for others they need to tweak it a bit more and more power to them as well.

Personally I wouldn't knock it til you tried it though, the DS-1 is pretty decent but with some quick and easy mods it really becomes pretty amazing

Can you please re-type this with a Gearman accent?

Re: Pedal Mods?

i don't get it, how should i add a german accent to it? When i was in dublin a week ago people told me i sound more irish than german when speaking english

Re: Pedal Mods?

It's not because famous players use them with or without mods that you should do like them... I don't give a French about what X or Y does, I trust my ears and mines only. And some pedals are cheap and sound ok stock but with 3 bucks of mods sound AMAZING. Why wouldn't it be worth it if I like it?

Re: Pedal Mods?

They vastly improve the sound. I mean it's all what you hear, though. I haven't found a Boss OD/distortion that sounds acceptable for my tone even after mods. If it sounds good as is to you & you don't want to spend money, then don't.

It's funny a bud of mine was over tonight and we jammed for a bit. He uses a bone stock ds-1 into his deuville, anyway I grabbed a modded one i had kicking around and hooked it up into his line. No comparison really, he dialed in more workable sounds with the modded pedal.

It had more of an open fuller sound, also more of a volume boost when engaged on the same settings. Trust your ears though, if you think the ds-1 sounds great bone stock, don't bother changing it.

Definately lots of 'pros' have a quite bad tone even after sent through thousands worth of studio gear. The point is don't just judge how good something is based on pro's using it. I've heard side by side demo's of ds-1 stock vs various mods and I haven't heard a mod that sounds worse then stock they all sound ALOT better then stock (although sometimes have too much bass very my liking but its better then thin fizzy distortion)

Re: Pedal Mods?

Pedal modding is the way to go for someone who doesn't want to spend 200€ or $ on a boutique pedal (come on we all now that the components of the best high end pedals out there do not cost more than 20-30€) but really want to have a boutique sound without having to pay for the word boutique.....Keep in mind though that not all mods will work......

I recently modded my boss BD2 with monteallums H2O mod and i love it, while i also modded a boss sd1 and didn't like the results......i didn't like the sd1 in the first place though....Now i really must find a true bypass mod for my electric mistress deluxe......

Re: Pedal Mods?

If you have a Strat that's perfect in all ways, except the trem is too wobbly, are you going to add another spring or get a new guitar with the spring already in place?

It's the same with pedal modding. You have a pedal that you dig, except for some minor stuff, so you change a few components, and then it sounds like you want. There's this foolish idea that there's always some boutique pedal that will give you the sound you want. If a $40 DS-1 is 3 component swaps away from being what you want, it would be pretty stupid to spend $300 on something else. You could ruin five DS-1s trying to mod them yourself, and still come out ahead :)

Re: Pedal Mods?

funny comparisons with boutique pedals. i recently bought two zvex fuzz pedals (fuzz factory, wooly mammoth) and hated them. i then bought a mohomodded black big muff. ding! exactly the tone i heard in my head.

I've heard guys on here talk about how modding pedals is stupid, and you should just buy the one that sounds good in the first place. If you're able to make what you have do what you want with relative ease and very little cost, parting with it and getting something else seems pretty stupid to me.

Re: Pedal Mods?

Different strokes for different folks.

Use what sounds best to you and what works best for you. Keep an open mind about your options, but ultimately revert to trusting your ears and/or your fingers.
